B14 Clutch Woes 1982 343 DL

Post by bob04917 » 29 May 2010 01:45 am

The other day, as I climbed a hill, she started bucking again and then she started vibrating as if something in the drive train was coming apart. This on & off bucking has been going on for a while now (9 months, maybe) and folks have told me it's either the carb (fuel starvation) or the timing. I've always thought it might be the clutch slipping??? Anyhow, I had to be towed home.

The engine starts and idles fine and I was able to put it in gear and move the car forward out of the parking space for the tow guy, but she (the 343) wouldn't do much more. After getting home, I tried jockeying it around but she started vibrating a bit when in gear, but couldn't move forward as it is on a slight incline. I have noticed that the bucking seemed to always manifest itself when going up an incline. This time, I did get a very slight burnt clutch smell. I had also got this smell a bit stronger about 2-3 weeks ago, before the my clutch cable broke (the two I'm sure are unrelated). Have you heard of anything like this? Clutch no good? Pressure plate?? :( Transmission/gearbox???

It has been sitting for a few days, so I thought I'd start her up to keep the battery charged. She started right up, but there was a vibrating and a slight GRRR sound. When I depressed the clutch pedal, the vibration and sound ceased. I did put her into first gear and she moved forward a bit. I also popped the hood (bonnet) and reached down and moved the release arm by hand in the proper direction, towards the front and the rear of the car. I was also able to move it up and down, I don't remember being able to do that when I changed the clutch cable. Has anyone had this sort of experience? How would one diagnose this?

Maybe I can convert her to a vario.

Any help and comments will be most appreciated.

Having thought about it. The clutch is toast. :D

hmm, the vibrating could be a piece of the clutchplate wich has broken off, that happens with CVT clutches sometimes; haven't seen it on a 3 series manual yet

and the clutch release arm can be moved by hand a bit if the pedal/cable isn't properly adjusted, but; you shouldn't be able to operate the pressureplate itself "easaly", based on the vibration i would definatly take the bellhousing off and see what happened with the total package (worn flywheel or bellhousing bearing could be the vibrating-problem too)

Good to hear an update on EFE.. bad to hear it's not a great one :(

I'd also take the bell housing off, quite easy on a 340 and see where you are then. If you need any help sourcing parts I'm sure we can help :)
