temp gauge question
temp gauge question
my glt's temp gauge is always just over half way and the needle can be just past the light above it at times. it never goes beyond that but surely its supposed to be halfway? it is on most cars.
i reckon its a possible air lock but i need to know where the needle on these normaly sit.

Re: temp gauge question
my 360s have always sat happily just below the red.
even on runs of many hundred miles in the summer through traffic jams etc.

Re: temp gauge question
ah ok, i was just thinking if i could get it down to normal and a cooler engine it may give a little more mpg and a bit more grunt.
i had that problem on the honda, my thermostat was playing up + a blockage and my gauge was all over the place! once sorted i noticed the difference instantly in the engine.

Re: temp gauge question
All my glts have sat at halfway even thrashing about on road rallies.
I'd backflush the system and pop a new thermo in for piece of mind if it were mine.

Foggy seemed quite alarmed when he saw where my GLE sat too.sven360 wrote:All my glts have sat at halfway even thrashing about on road rallies.

Never had any problems though.
Suppose it couldve done with a flush though.
I never did flush any of mine.
Re: temp gauge question
On an unmodified car it should be rock solid in the middle. If its moving around there is something wrong. There is not much to the system;
Check the rad small hose is not blocked (this is the bleeder at the top), nor the pipe union on the tank.
Check the thermostat operates correctly by dunking it in water on the cooker and measuring the opening temp, otherwise just replace the thermostat and make sure you get the correct one. Check your owners manual for the correct temp spec.
If its just heating up in traffic, maybe your viscous coupler or water pump is knackered.
Check your rad is evenly warm all the way down, if alot of it is cooler than the rest it could be silted up.
I presume you have eliminated leaks as a cause?
Could be a problem with the gauge just.

Re: temp gauge question
well it doesn't heat up in traffic just when i 'm driving it moves up a little then back down never much more than that. defo gonna get a new stat- they don't cost much and will check the rad cap aswell as giving it a good flush.
there is nothing leaking but does look like its had a new hose and there is a little bit of dry bright green gunk around the end of it for some reason
this is why i think there may be a blockage of some sort.
roll on saturday.

Re: temp gauge question
How long should it take to warm up? I dont see mine lift off the bottom on my drive to and from work which is about 15 min trip.
I know it works because it got real warm when I split a hose and almost ran it dry.

Re: temp gauge question
well in all the cars i've had any thng from 1-4 mins depending on the weather. 15 mins means your sat needs changing as its not opening up and letting the water circulate and also possibly have a blockage/air lock.

Re: temp gauge question
Sounds like the Opp lock's stat is stuck open.
Or the temp sender/gauge is US.

Re: temp gauge question
I was more thinking that the previous owner has removed the the thermostat entirely. I guess i'll soon find out...
