Clutch problem thats not really a problem?

Post by Lowandslow » 31 Aug 2011 09:18 pm

Right I've just sold my car on ebay and the guy didn't want to buy it beacuse when you're in neutral and you press the clutch up and down it clunks/rattles for a split second on full return when there's no pressure on the thrust bearing (makes absolutely no noise when driving at all). I know that this slight rattle is the thrust bearing, mainly because it's massive (1.7 gl '87) but also I don't count it as a problem since I wouldn't drive my car if it wasn't safe, when I fitted the clutch a few months ago everything looked spot on and mainly sincI've driven over 1500 miles on it, no clutch slip, no issues selecting gear, no struggle setting off, infact no issues at all and the car isn't in a ball of flames.

Am I safe to say everything is fine with my car and be as happy as I was before I got really annoyed tonight or do I need to have a look at it. Pretty convinced everything is fine :D .

Cheers

the clunking noise is normal as it's a open-air transaxle system. the end bearing of the bellhousing tailpiece and first bearing of the gearbox tend to make this noise, due to letting the propshaft spin without counterforce (the rubber joints let it bounce a little bit enlargening the noise) but if the car doesn't vibrate @ 4000/4500rpm or higher it's no problem

The guy sounds like he's pussying out of a sale, looking for any excuse not to buy. Happens quite a bit on ebay :(

Thought as much, I'm pretty certain if it wasn't fine that it would be a constant noise when driving or changing gear but it's all gravy throughout the whole rev range.

Ahh well back on ebay it is in a few days to start all over again

Cheers guys for the quick response :)

Assuming you're talking about the clunk which happens if you release the clutch pedal quickly whilst in neutral, the noise is the clutch fork which has worn and slightly lost its position, but unless its really obvious its not a big deal. There's always a clunk as the others have said, even with all brand new components, but yeah it does get a bit worse as the clutch fork wears, but I've never heard of it being a problem.

I've had a few that rattled like hell at the prop/box/bellhousing until warmed up, just ticking over in neutral.
But the clunk when you release the clutch and spin the prop.. that's nothing, backlash in the driveline - if it wasn't rattling even... that's wriggling out of the sale.
