Post by Jameyelliott » 22 Nov 2011 01:31 pm

I have been thinking about doing this conversion but unsure about it tbh ? Plus is there any where that will do it for you possibly ?

Is the f7r the best conversion to do for drifting tho? Is there any other ones I should look out for that are good ? Cause it seems loads of people are going for the f7r ?

I'd maybe say if you wanted to do an engine change, f7p is better as it's more responsive (albeit less powerful). But tbh, you could drift a 1.4 if you welded a diff.

The F7p although being more responsive, has less torque. For drifting you want as much torque as you can get :P So the F7r is the one for you :) If you can get hold of a rotten 1700 car, transfer all that over as you'll need the bellhousing, mounts, crossmember, hoses etc. And then save up to get a decent F7r with all the danglies and while your saving, you could be practicing with the 1700 :) Then swap it all over and off you go :D

O'rly? So a good drift car is more about torque than power then?

Aye, the torque is what breaks the tyres loose. Power is just a by-product effectively. We've been talking bout this at uni, the whole power/torque argument. Torque is the one you want :D

I remember something along the lines of, you cant measure power, without torque, or something like that :) But yeah, when you've got the ass end hanging out, sideways in front of the crowds and you feel the back end bite and the engine revs die, you want the torque from the F7r to be able spin those suckers back up again :)

I've always liked this though :)

Oversteer, is when you hit the wall with the back of the car, Understeer, is when you hit the wall with the front of the car, power, is how fast you hit the wall, and torque, is how far you take the wall once you've hit it!  haha

HA HA! love that!

Yeah, cant have power without torque. VND, it is surprising to be fair. People are slowly coming round to them. There's a Merc drift diesel thats chuffing awesome. in Norway or somewhere like that. Awesome pic somewhere of it drifting, and half the smoke is soot from the engine!

Diesels are harder to tune though, AFAIK, as they obv don't work in the way a normal petrol engine does.

Diesel turbos can be tuned but it has to be understood that in a diesel the turbo provides pressure almost all the time, whereas petrol it only applies at the top end of the rev range/throttle opening.

Black Smoke Racing! it's an epic car, looks insane. Get's more angle than a protractor! Despite many internet rumours, it doesn't just run a stock 6 banger derv with a Scania blower.
