car dies when turn lights on.. 1.4 340 please help :)

so my volvo has been going pretty good for a month or 2 until now, i was driving the other night and flashed my headlights to say thank you to a car that pulled in to let me pass and everything just died and wouldn't start. luckily it was outside my girl friends house so i went in had my food and came out... started first time! thought it was strange but hey it was working again...

the day later i started my car after finishing work, (been working fine all day, with out using lights) turned the lights on and it died again, this time i wasn't moving and it died with the choke on as i was letting it warm up.... again started ok 10 mins later....

then when i got up to work the following day it started fine, then you guest it died when i put the lights on... and i havent been able to start it since...

so basically when i turned the lights on it kills the engine, but everything else still works, radio interior lights etc.... but now when i turn the key the only thing that does work is there are no dash lights at all..

i am thinking ignition switch?

is this a common fault or has anyone had this before?

any help is much appreciated. thank you

p.s checked all the fuses and all are ok.

First idea leaping to mind are the big wires at back of fuse box/dodgy multiplug?

Do a search top right here, it's common enough.
