Solid mounts for 340

Post by Alan M » 16 Jan 2012 12:30 pm

Hi everyone this is my first thread here so be gentle. I have a 340 running standard mounts with a2.0 engine from a 460 which I plan to track this year. I'll be lowering it and leaving the diff open and the car will only. E used to and from with track use also. I want to know is it possible to use solid mounts for the engine and box and do away with the standard items as I should be able to make my own from delrin or ally. What pitfalls may I face if the. Punts are solid or can anyone give me any advice on what to use or route to go. Cheers in advance.

I'd be super worried making solid mounts, the bits of tin plate and cast ali at the back end (both the upright bracket and the steering subframe) just can't deal with any more vibration than standard.

Proper poly mounts where the studs are not joined is the only way in my opinion, as OEM are un obtainium.

Okay cheers for the warning. Is there a preferred supplier of poly bushes for a complete set? Is it worth making any of the bushes solid and having a mix across the engine and box/diff say solid up front on the engine and poly towards the rear or just poly throughout?

Also sourcing gasket sets for engine manifolds and diff are they available anywhere? I did start reading into the one thread here about the diff gaskets but it's a bit awkward without my glasses on using the phone lol. I can source most gaskets in sheet form so some of the drawings are very useful in that particular thread.

Is it possible to overhaul the propshaft just to keep it fresh along with the mounts being changed?

I'd give Dai a ring and see what he can do, the rear mounts I run are not a direct fit (have a nosey through my project thread to see whats involved...) and unless Dai's changed them, the fronts he supplies are 3mm too short.

Start there, work forward about 4 pages: http://www.volvo300mania.com/forum-uk/v ... &start=345

That's an interesting read. I like the fact you made your own mounts to suit and rigged a laser pointer crude but effective. I have laser alignment equipment to hand for work so will use that when setting the diff/propshaft up when I come to remove all the parts for a good going over. This forum from my limited reading so far is very informative and owners are finding alternatives for spares from other vehicles which is very good so for my budget racer I think I bought a good starter.

I think that I will be making my own mounts as I run a 2.0 engine so I think I may come across a few problems. I will see when I get going.

I used to run the 440 2ltr engine in mine and that is why I made the poly mounts. The 2ltr ripped one of teh rubber mounts in half so I had to do something.

One thing I would warn you about is the 2ltr does not cope very well with the 1.7 exhaust manifold. Mine used to get very hot and the down pipe flange cracked a couple of times. I changed the the B18U manifold and part of teh down pipe making a marked improvment.

So whats the deal with solidly mounting the gearbox? I believe its on rubber mounts in the chassis at the back? Are there solid ones available? Or if they already are feel free to laugh at me
