Need Starter/flywheel help on my valver please

Post by rockheadrumble » 10 Jan 2012 08:07 pm

I recently purchased a 340 1.8 valver and i have a problem that the starter won't turn the flywheel. It makes a horrible grinding noise.

I have read on here that a adoptor plate needs to be fitted? When looking at the teeth on the flywheel and the teeth on the starter the teeth look further apart on the clio starter. And they dont seem to fully engage (the teeth are to far away from each other)

can someone tell me if my set up is wrong? Should i be using a different starter motor other than the clio one? Or a different flywheel?

I need this sorted as now i own 2 broken volvo's!!

Cheers

joe

Im not an expert on the valvers, but i thought you had to use a 1.7 starter motor in the 1.7 bell housing? Thomas...............

I just used the clio starter and flywheel, as the engine came. Mines an F7R though, but I'm pretty sure they are similar to the 1.8s. Why would you swap to the 1.7 starter? the 1.7 bellhousing fits fine over both the the starter and the flywheel of the clio one.

Could be that the starter motor teeth are worn, so won't crank the engine. Like I said I left mine as it is, and all works well.

hey

I purchased a new starter for the clio and tried this but with no success. it still just grinds the teeth?

spoke to the guy i bought it from and he says its a clio flywheel and the 1.7 bell housing so everything should be fine, unfortunately its not though!

Anybody got any more suggestions please?

If what jon is saying is the case, you made need another flywheel as the ring gear might be gone. The best thing i can think of is simply whipping the prop and bell housing off and having a look :) Thomas...................

iv had a look at the teeth on the the flywheel, they do look as if they have been rubbed badly but they dont look worn, certainly no where to the extent that the starter would'nt engage it.

thanks for the replys so far

Thought i do a quick update on this to close it off.!

I got it sorted. It was down to the simple fact that the bell housing only had two of the top bolts holding it on! The guy i bought this car off was an absolute cowboy. Im having to redo alot of his work!!!

Thanks for everyone who made suggestions and tried helping out.

FFS, I wish people would stop bodging these things, they get bad enough rep as it is destroying props.

PEOPLE WHO PUT VALVERS IN 340s STOP BODGING THEM!!! IT WILL RUN WELL!

PAH! cheeky bugger. It's not bodged at all! Head warping due to a faulty thermostat is not a bodge, so ha!

And you're welcome

fuel lines next to do as the pipe from the the tank has 10 different connections just in the engine bay. 5 of which dont even have jubilee clips or any sort of retainer!!!

then the exhaust because it a was like this \/\/\/\/\/\ from the down pipe to the rear!!! no bends just angles!

cheers
