Changing the water pump

Post by pyoorkate » 06 Apr 2012 10:49 pm

So, our beloved 340 seems to know it's approaching 100k miles and to celebrate it's decided to test us a bit. A couple of weeks ago the rad went, leaking all of the coolant - more or less - out through what became a front facing fountain. We managed to get the car home (it was only a couple of miles away, so I just sucked up the expense and through all the spare coolant I had in, and then followed my wife home with her driving Chester). I changed the rad for a shiny, shiny new one we had all of a couple of days of joy before the coolant level started to drop again.

After a few days of hunting around and never seeing anything, then a few days of finding puddles generally under the car but not anywhere obvious I found it (because it got worse). The water pump's now failed and is quietly leaking the nice, expensive, new coolant out :(

I've got a new one on order, but we've still not unpacked the house, so the manual for the volvo is in one of the many boxes marked 'books'. Believe me, there's a lot of boxes.

So my quick question is, I'm assuming that it's basically slacken belt / release hoses / unbolt / clean mating surfaces / new gasket / new pump / pipes back on / belt back on / refill system.

There's no funky things I need to watch out for with unbolting it? No quirks to refilling the system when the pump's empty? Nothing weird like that?*

Cheers folks!

* I only ask because my friend had a K-Series minor which you had to do something funky to when you filled it - it wasn't just refill the rad and go 'cos it had an air-trap somewhere.

There's nothing major, but don't go steaming in and undo all the bolts. If you slacken off ALL the bolts, you wind up removing the housing too.

The housing is mentioned is in the sandwich: WATER PUMP - HOUSING - HEAD.

I think this is either an R12 or DAF 66 arrangement. The housing is probably different, but the bolt pattern and idea should be the same.

The red ones are the housing to head bolts. The green ones are pump to housing.

As can be seen, in order to remove just the pump. Undo all the green ones AND no5 and no 6. Leave 1-4 alone unless you need to pull the whole housing off (and have a gasket handy)

like this Renault one:

(although ignore my pen markings to cut the middle out, that's just to make a gasket for the opposite end of the cylinder head)

Not sure if there is a bleed wotsit at the heater for refilling, I'll just go and check the book of lies....

EDIT: Kate, I've had a few accidents just now in the "tripping over whilst reading the Haynes manual and the book accidentally falling flat open on the co-incidentally the right page" style. Check the Flickr ;)

Worth changing the stat too whilst you have the top hose off. They like to fail open and take forever to warm up.

At the same time it is perhaps worth investigating the condition of your coolant hoses, as the system will be drained anyway.

Mmm, I was thinking that, but then could only find the bottom and top hoses for sale anywhere. If you (or anyone) has a tip of somewhere that's got a complete set of hoses for sale (ideally not painfully expensive) then I'd be interested :)

**Cough, Cough**. Kate, you've been looking in the wrong places if you can only find the bottom and top hoses

See, I looked on dafhobby and could only see a couple of hoses for the late 340s... I admit it was only a quick look! :)

Thanks for the headsup though, I've popped a PM over to volvomania. :)

Of course, this might count as preventative maintenance, which is something I've not been able to do since starting my course... I'm not sure I'm allowed to do anything preventative, I think I just have to wait for parts to fail and then stress and panic about it!

I need to look after Chester better tho, 'cos with my new job I'm not going to be driving so I'm going to pop my Classic in the garage ('cos I have "plans" for her), and Chester will be the only car in use (mind, Rebecca'll still be MOT'd and taxed until the MOT runs out).

Allready answered the PM.

The hoses we hold under the "Born Built Beauties" name are all newly produced and not NOS although I can source those as well if needed...
Just try googling Born Built Beauties, although the majority of the answers are in Dutch, you'll be amazed what is out there.
