Fuel cut-off relay

Post by Przemek » 02 Dec 2005 08:40 pm

Well, there is another problem with my '89 1.4. I want to install gear change indicator and indicator for idle solenoid (when close, I use relay switching led to be on when solenoid is closed). Problem is, that led connected to renix is still shining and idle solenoid is still on (it has to be off when revs are 1600 and the throttle is shut). Another interesting thing is that from the renix module are outgoing 3 bonus wires (two are ground used only in AT and B14S engines and one is for gear change indicator). IMO they cannot be installed by producer, becouse I have MT and B14.4E engine. I already found on carburettor a switch which informs a cut-off relay that the throttle is shut, but there isn't any wire from it and worst there isn't any cut-off relay in that car :( It all looks like there never was that relay in my Volvo. My question is: what is wrong with that and where I can find that relay in my car?

The relay is a large box on the left hand side hanging on the inner wing next to the left spring turret.

The signal wire is a spade connector next to the idle speed adjustment screw and should have a blsck wire coming from it.

Yes, I know where that relay should be mounted by factory (I found it in this topic). But all seems that relay wasn't mounted in my car ever (there aren't any wires coming out from the factory wiring). Haynes isn't saying anything about that module, only this was mounted together with renix ignition. I thought maybe in late years of production Volvo stoped installing it (like for example in Skoda Favorit, where in the carburettor is idle solenoid, but it is used only for preventing the spontaneous ignition when the ignition is off), but now I don't know what to do with this. Maybe I install equivalent module from VW Golf II 1.3 or Wartburg 1.3 (they are working on the same revs like in V340 and are much cheaper that original Volvo parts even from scrap yard) :?
Ok, thats one problem out, but what you think about that bonus wiring from renix? I disconnected it yesterday and car is still running, but they are there for some reason :? Why manufacturer place it there when I have B14.4E engine with MT and they are used (I also don't know why) only in B14S with AT (that says Haynes supplement for year 1986). And another interesting thing that I discovered yesterday - engine types. According with indicate plate and VIN my engine type is 57, but manual says:
53 = B14.4E
54 = B14.4O
55 = B14.4S
72 = D16
11 = B172
20 = B200K/O
21 = B200K/S
23 = B200K/E
22 = B200E/O
25 = B200E/A
28 = B200E/E
27 = B200 F
Who says true now :?

That bonus wiring is used to retard the ignition timing more, so that the car will work on unleaded, but it was only done on the earlier cars as the B14.4E is already low enough compression IIRC. You should look for a red/blue wire and together with it a black wire around the carburettor. The red/blue wire is for the idle solenoid (your car must have one as it contains the idle jet) and the black one is the signal for the fuel cut off relay.

Yeah :roll: , but why in Haynes is only that:

They forgot to write about other models or do this on pupose :? And that caption: 'B14 models with automatic transmission'. For me it looks like they forgot to run the rest of diagrams fo cars since 1986.
So if my engine is B14.4E can I throw that wiring away (especially becouse that bonus wires are looking like they weren't given by manufacturer - their insulation is done by rag-sellotape :roll: )?
Now the idle solenoid case. In my car is something like that:
-> http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/5304/a8zl.jpg
There is red/blue wire whitch is going to fuse 10 (voltage after ignition). Also there is a switch with spade connector (like you said next to the idle speed adjustment screw), but no wire. On the left side (like on photo in earlier linked topic) are two plastic bolts for relay. I can say that, they weren't used since that car drive from factory - that is they never been used. It all looks like my car should have 'red marked' wiring (as other Volvos since 1986), but it has 'green marked' (as Volvos since 1984 to 1985, while they start using renix module).

There are now two ways of explanation:
1) for the Swiss market (my car is from Switzerland) was made some limited version
2) my car is, like we saying in Poland, 'transplant' (from two different cars is made one).
I don't have any more ideas :(
