Mmmm, that's a good question and I don't have the answer
at this moment. I didn't know it was a PLASTIC tank on the 340 diesel! sm66 I thought it was
the same tank on the 340 1.4, 1.7 and diesel. sm74 I've learned something! sm69 I will try
to get the answer...
What I know it's that you can't use the tank of a 340 1.4 because it's completely different:
the hole for the durits is under the back seat with the 2.0 engine but it's in the trunk for the
1.4... The capacity is also different...
Petrol is maybe too "aggressive" for a plastic tank? sm14

Duverl78 is right, the gas tanks between 340's and 360's are
completely different.
To be a little more exact: the 340 gastank takes up the space reserved for the spare (which of
course is located under the hood) whereas the 360 tank is placed partly over the gearbox and
rear differential (spare is placed normally under the trunk carpet).
Can't remember exact volumes right now, but as I recall, the 360 tank is something like 67
liters in size...
I remember reading something about an extra tank that Volvo was offering for the 300-series...
but then, as I'm not sure, this is pure speculation.
Cheers,
Ari

Yep, perfectly explained!
According to someone on the French forum, the tank for the 340 diesel seems to be the same
as for the 360... And he said that it wasn't a problem the plastic tank. I just need one more
confirmation and it will be ok! sm69

Hi, according to Volvo parts catalogue there are three similar
fuel tanks that could be fitted in the Volvo 340/360. One for the fuel injected (B200E/B19E)
engine and one for the carburettor (B200K/B19A)engine. The third one is the one fitted to the
Diesel engine (D16). Each has a different part number but what I could figure out from the
pictures is that the diesel fuel tank is similar to the carburettor engine.

As this is my first post, I would like to say hello to everybody.
Fuel tank capacities for petrol cars are:
340: 45 L
360: 57 L
I have no information for diesel.
Only make the change if everything fits perfectly, including the connections to the tank, and
sender unit otherwise it may be a safety hazard. Also try to get an opinion from a professional if
plastic is good for petrol.
Maybe you could find the 360 tank at some scrap yard?

The fuel tank of a diesel may be placed under the rear seat but
according to the folders, it's a different capacity from the 360: a 360 (in every guise) has 57
litres, a diesel only 48 (or 46 in other folders), which is just slightly more than the aft tank of a
340 (45 litres).

tanks metal, tanks plastic

Post by mgarageu » 04 Jan 2004 03:12 pm

the question is mainly about plastic
tank and petrol compatibility...
no difference about liters...
the replacing is quite difficult job. it is because i want to use the plastic one...

Yes I know. But as the size isn't the same, the tank won't be
the same. It could be so that the diesel-tank doesn't have room for the driveshaft, which is
beefed-up on a 360 and isn't on a 340. So the only way to be sure is: place the to next to
each other, and spot the differences.

Well well well...
I'm afraid that the answer is "no"
According to a member of the dutch Volvo 300 club, the plastic isn't compatible with petrol...
