I just got a 340 DL S6 and I'm very pleased with the driving characteristics of this car. However, this car leaves a rather significant oil stain everywhere I park. After a quick look in the engine compartent I found a leaking gasket that should prevent oil from leaking out of the engine at the fuel pump. The fuel pump is attached with 2 bolds, altough the gasket is attached with a third bold at the bottom. I wander if the correct fuelpump is installed, since the gasket does not match the pump and leaks a lot.
Does anybody have a digital picture of the correct fuelpump for this car.

Hi Pablo, I asume your 340 has the B14 engine (only one with 3 bolts mounting the fuel pump). It sounds like the insulating/spacer plate is missing.
There should be a plastic spacer between the pump and the block. The pump itself is retained by one bolt and one nut (block should have one stud), or by the two bolts you mention, The third bolt retains the spacer. There are gaskets on either side of the spacer.
The correct pump for the B14 should look like this.
The diagram below should show you the arrangement of the spacer.
THe part number of the spacer is 3287865, The spacer gasket is 3213437 and the pump gasket is 3213442.
If the spacer is missing it would explain the leaks. It is possible that someone has removed the spacer to compensate for a worn pump arm or pump cam. If the spacer is present check or replace both of the gaskets. Check also for distortion or cracking of the pump mounting flange. If the pump is badly worn it is also possible that oil could leak from the pump arm pivot shaft boring.
Hope the above helps.
Mac.

I finally found the problem. I took the old fuelpump apart and found 2 seals. One for the fuel on the upper part and one for the oil at the lower part. In between these 2 seals is an opening to prevent a vacuum. The oilseal was torn and oil was leaking out of the vent. So the gaskets were oke after all, but the pump itself was broke. Poor analysis from me. I like to fix things thoroughly, so the new gaskets with the new pump are the way to go. I do have some pictures, but don't know how to upload these.
Thanks for all the help, it was fun.[/img]

Hi Pablo,
Very glad you're sorted - oil is 'splash' fed into the lower pump housing to lubricate the operating arm pivot.
Ran into the same problem with posting pix when I first joined V3M - the pix need to be uploaded to a 'public' website first, and accessed from there.
The first pix I posted were kindly 'hosted' by another member - and I now use 'photobucket' (quite free). I'll PM you my e-mail address - if you mail me your snaps I will happily post them for you.
All the best Mac.

Mornin' all, here are Pablos' pics of his fuel pump - the failed diaphram rod oil seal is VERY clearly seen.
glad you got it fixed Pablo!
