Fuel leak from box section
Fuel leak from box section
Hello, on my 360 there's a fuel leak from the near-side box section which carries the plastic pipes from the fuel tank at the back. I plan to replace the pipes, but is this an easy job? I have owned the car for 18 months and only just discovered why it smells of petrol badly after running the engine. Others have commented on the mystery petrol smell too. Any clues on replacing these pipes and how easy it is to get at them where they attach to the fuel tank would be much appreciated. Cheers, bogbasic.

Right, now I seem to think your 360 is a GLE carb, correct? If so, then I'm not much use really! I now know of how the 340 pipes work, and it's basically the first and last sections of those that perish, before and after where they join onto the clear plastic pipes running from front to back. I've replaced those on my 340. I'd imagine it might be a similar thing on the 360, in which case I'd not like to say how hard or easy it is as the tank location is different.

Had this on my 360GLE B200K about 10 years ago. There is a joint in the nylon pipe in the box section, which is rubber hose pushed over the ends of the nylon pipe and with crimp on hose clips. The rubber hose gives up. The whole job is a bit of a pain, because you have to pull the pipe out part way to get at the joint, and I couldn't move them on mine: they were trapped between the floor and the top of the tank. I had to loosen (but not remove) the fuel tank to do the job. You also have to remove the hose from the fuel tank. Access to this is under the big black plastic panel under the back seat on the right side.
Good luck

'40s perish one of the pipes MJ (expansion tank one I think), how much was in there, I've only had them leak on a hill, and with around £25-£30 in there. Thats why I only fill Kar up with £20 at a time... and do the same on Fake, although I havn't checked if it leaks or not yet

Its all the pipes that slowly perish. Volvo saw fit to make them out of the most cheapy thin rubber cloth covered hose possible so they only last a few years before leaking. We changed ours with the correct hose and it lasted about 2 years before it started leaking again
. The secret is to renew with good quality hose from either a factor or Halfords.
On the 360 carb, its the breather at the back and the sender hoses at the top and on the 340 its the breather and the expansion tank hoses and also the sender at the top.
On the 360 the sender underneath the rear passenger seat under a plastic cover on one side, I think RHS. On the 340 its in the boot under a metal cover right in the centre. You'll need to jack the car and release some of the clips that hold the plastic pipe so you can pull it through enough to get at it properly.
The breather pipes are underneath the rhs boot cover on both cars, but the 340s have an expansion tank that the 360s don't have. Again though, some of the hoses go down through the floorpan and underneath the car, so you'll need to jack it to change them.
Hope that helps.

I hope I got it somewhat right from memory, those blue plastic things that run inside car body were leaking too in my car, well only one was that I replaced, but it seems to be that other one may leak now too, all those fabric things I have replaced, needed to take that metal cover underside of fueltank/transmission out to reach some of them, then rear seat needed to be removed and under that is hole where I got to reach to other two that connects to top of tank.
I have that pic as layered template too so if someone knows how those go in other models and has interested to draw now it is possible too

Here is that in photoshop layered image, really easy to make changes as everything has own layer.
