I'm looking to buy a 340. I've heard that the turbo motor fits on the same engine mounts, is this true. Also what other engines will fit, what modifications if any are required.
Thanks,
Paul
340 engine transplant
Yes, the body on all 300 series are quite the same.
In a 340, you probably have the B14, a renault 1.4L. The same engine can be found at least from a renault 5, both with turbo, and without, the 1,4 carbyturbo should fit quite easilly. One guy here at the Finnish volvo forum has done this.
Then there is the 1,7L renault carb. 400 series volvo engines are basically the same. You can plant a 1,6, 1,7, 1,7TurboIC, 1,8 and 2,0 engine in place of the 1,7carb. But the propshaft could be a problem, with the turbo engine.
Then there are Volvo 2,0L carb and injection engines. Carbys found in 340 series 1979-1982, and 360 volvos with both carbs and inj. Theese are "easy" to replace with any volvo redblocker, from a 200/700/900 series volvo. With turbo or without. 8v NA redblockers will fit directly, turbos need a own made downpipe. 16v redblock will fit, but you need to make your own engine mounts. The 16v NA (B234F) fits by it's downpipe, and if you have a 8v block + 16v NA head, it's a easy match. The 16v turbo is also possible to fit. Both 16v and 8v turbo need a adapterplate between the exhaust manifold and the turbo to fit.
I've put in my 340 1,4L a Volvo Penta 2,5L 16v redblocker, with a 8v block. The dizzy needed some modification on the cabin fan to fit. The dizzy is at the rear of the cylhead, because it doesn't fit between the 8v block and 16v head without HEAVY mods. Same thing for the 16v block, exept, there isn't a possibilty at all to mount a dizzy in the 16v block.
