engine mount

Post by mgarageu » 27 Sep 2006 06:33 pm

no idea about how long they last. but after replacing the front exhaust pipe does not meet the chassis any more. the difference can be seen with two different mounts in your hand...there is a small nest into it goes the pin or sth which holds the mount while doing the lower nut...Image
the detail on the newer style mount is seen ahead the bolt...the older version was a little bit different, so i needed to do some handwork...

Hi again.

Im looking for similar mounts to use and I see this two:

Volvo 140 Engine B20

Image

Volvo 240 Engine B230

The first looks so similar but I don't know the dimensions of that mounts. Handwork might be needed but seems easy to fit and are very cheap.

The web where I saw the mounts:

What do you think?

I might not trust normal rubber-metal mounts as only supporting mounts when the engine is hanging and not laying on the mounts. Because if the rubber would go bad the engine would drop on the road.. :P One might think that normal mounts like in the pics are not designed to be used with setup where the engine is hangin from the mounts.

Though I don't have any facts but this is what I've been told.. :P I don't know if the Volvo original rubber mounts differ somehow what comes to structural strength. At least they are designed to work with a setup where engine hangs as those in other Volvos are designed to work in a setup where engine lays on them.

One member of this Finnish Volvo community has also those older style mounts in his "340TIC." B19 engine and those mounts came from a 343.

http://s52.photobucket.com/albums/g11/340tic/tuet/

I'm not 100% sure but looking those pics, it would seem that those older style mounts have a metal surrounding also at the sides and rubber is inside. This would make sense as my bet is that there's also a some kind of metal inside the rubber where the lower bolt attatches, so if the rubber would give up, the engine still wouldn't drop on the road. No facts but this is my guess. ;)

Maybe mgarageu can clear things out, I can't tell from those pics if those older style mounts are built as I think they are.

Here's what I mean.

At the left is a normal sandwich type rubber-metal mount. Red is metal and black is rubber.

At the right is what I would think a older style mount looks like.

Am I right or is the older type mount also a plain sandwhich mounting? :P I can't tell from those pics.

I make polyurathane ones for the amazon and 140. These take a lot of force to pull them appart.
I do also make fail safe ones that need modification to fit.

Hello again.

I'm searching for sikaflex 291 to fill my mount, I found other forums and saw that sikaflex is famous to make mounts solid.

I need info about the interior of the hydraulic mounts to find where I should drill the holes for the best oil drain/sikaflex penetration. A sectional view/scheme will be perfect. xD

If someone has info about the interior of the mounts please let me know.

Thanks in advance.
Rafa.

I don't know if someone has posted measurements of those mounts.
http://koti.mbnet.fi/tourinki/Mount/Kuv ... 20copy.jpg
But here goes
1) 87,9mm
2) 99,2mm
3) 25,2mm
4) 38,0mm
5) 26mm
6) 12mm

measurements are fairly accurate. at least they are close of the real measurements.

Hello again.

Last month and after change the alternator in other of my cars I take a look at the distribution belt of the volvo and it's looks very bad (after twenty years and 115k km seems original to me).

I decided to change the belt by myself and at the same time, sikaflex my engine mounts. I couldn't find sikflex 291 but bought a similar product called polikar.

Today I drove the car for about 100 km and it works fine.

Here are some shots.

A views from under the car before remove the mount (the engine sits too low)

Here are one mount after drilled and "sikaflexed"

Closer view of the interior of the mount.

Mounts ready for installation on the car.

First I compress the mounts and drill on the top of the mount but for best penetration of the polyurethane I drill four holes of 6mm at the top side and used it to do the job (the others hasn't use).

The engine now sits about an inch higher and the fan is on the center of the plastic panel. No more hits between these items!!!

Hope that helps anyone. ;)

Sorry for my bad english and thanks for all the info.

Very good! Let's hope it will also hold like that. :)

I think I might try this too in the meantime untill Dai gets the 360 engine mounts ready for sale. :P

Hi! How have the sikaflex filled mounts been holding? Still working fine? I'm just asking because I'm thinking about doing the same thing in mine, because mounts in mine are kinda worn and engine sits way too low.

Did you let the sikaflex dry before you installed those, or did you install the mounts straight after you had filled those?

And then question for Dai, do you have anything new what comes to 360 engine mounts, there was some talk some time ago about the possibility of you making something for 360 too, anything new?

Hello Fuse.

I drove 2.500 km with the car since the repair was done, it still working fine and I'm very happy with it. No noises since then, included bumpy roads.

When I "sikaflexed" my mounts left a week to cure the polyurethane and then I installed it on the car. Is really important to retain the mount compressed during the cure process.

Hope it works fine for you.
Rafa.
