360 turbo

Hello everybody,

I'd just like to know more about the possibility to fit a turbo into a 360 GLT. :360:

It's already been discust many time but do you know if you can fit it withno major problems into the engine compartiment?

What about the rear brakes, does someone have an idea how to turn it into discs? sm19

Fuse, can you tell us more about the result? Performances....

as for the rear discs, i have 2 pot mini cooper(early cooper not the bmw)callipers fitted . 5lab has a photo may be he could show it!!??

Turbo fits in quite nicely if you make a new exhaust manifold or use one from 200/700-series car and make and adapter which brings the turbo a bit higher. Of course you need to do something for the LE-jet and ignition system to handle boost. Performance is quite good, at least enough for me. Though I run relatively low boost, because I don't have an intercooler yet and I'm not quite sure yet how much boost the current LE-Jet+extra injector can handle. Should buy an air/fuel ratio meter. :P Enough performance for me though. Weak spot is the transaxle system. Well not the gearbox or the rear-axle. Those handle enough power but the connection between the cardan axle and the gearbox might broke. Nothing has broken for me yet but some people have reported broken connections between the cardan axle and the gearbox even with the stock engine. I think that it will handle some power if it is not already in bad shape or broken. This in 360 of course. Aluminum cardan system with Renault engines is a lot weaker and I think that with turbo it would be broken quite often. :P

I hope someone understands what I tried to say. ;) English is not my native language so I'm not so familiar with all car-tech words there is. :P

ive shreaded a diff,snapped a shaft, snapped a diff casing clean in 2 and sheared constant gears in gearbox. :mrgreen: . all the fun of the fair though!!

The 360 > Turbo engine swap has been covered in infinite depth before, and there are numerous conversions out there. It is pretty easy, but not totally drop-in. You need to do something about the intercooler (too big as standard), and the downpipe is a problem. I could go on....but you get the picture - nothing terminal, but not a 2 minute job either!

The best thing to do is to get a complete running B230ET engine from a 740/760 - buy the whole car - then take your car off the road for a week to do the swap. I think that's the road to minimal hassle.

Hi,

I'm kind of new around here so i'm still checkin' out and stuff. But I saw this topic and I got interrested. I own a 340 1.4 from '84 and a 360 2.0i from '89. Sow I got interested about this turbo thing. I heard around here in holland that you can tweek up the 360 2.0 ltr engine to about 160 HP without a turbo!!!! I heard it from a guy who races at our circuit in Zandvoort. So anyone of you guys now anything about that?? And euhmm how much power you get when you add a turbo to your engine??

160 seems like a reasonable figure, but it'll be a fairly 'toppy' power curve. To get there I'd expect...

1) Hotter cam
2) Balanced bottom end (for 7k+ redline)
3) Full sports exhaust & header (manifold)
4) Maybe some head work - a 531 head from a B230ET / B230FB is a good easy upgrade.
5) Mapping the fuel and ignition to cope - for example the ignition map stops at 6500rpm, and alterations like the cam will probably send the fuelling off.

That's a lot of work.

I'd just fit a B230ET / FT (2.3 turbo - from 700/940), and have 185 / 165bhp straight off. Job done.
Alternatively, a B234F (2.3 16v) motor would be nice, as would a PRV V6.

EDIT: Just to add, I'm running a B200K, soon to have a V or K cam, and twin 'throttle body' carbs. I'm aiming for at least 120bhp, and 130 with an exhaust and a 531 head - if that ever happens! Long term plan is a B230ET.

at least 120? i'd hope so, isnt stock hp 116? or was that just the b19 output? i'm aimin for a 360 Great Lack of Turbo (GLT) hp :P

~115bhp is stock for a B200E, but mine is a B200K (105bhp). Of course I'm hoping for more, but I'd rather aim low and be pleasantly surprised ;) Given that a B200E at 115hp has a 'single point' throttle body and only an A cam, I can probably realistically expect more like 130+ with the 530 head and standard exhaust. 150 ought to be in reach with an exhaust, header, and flowed (maybe big valve?) 531 head. 160-170 if I get the bottom end balanced and have a 7000rpm redline. However, we're heading into no-bottom-end race engine territory now...although the carbs will help the bottom end a lot compared to injection. I don't wanna think about fuel costs though...

I've made my mind up...without nitrous, there's no way you're getting 360bhp NA out of the inline 4. A 9k redline from a balanced / forged B23 with a 16v head would probably get you to about 300, but it would also implode after about 1000 miles...

If you're determined, I'd go for forged B23, flowed 16v head, penta cams, and a 160 shot of nitrous - 200 + 160 = 360!

That sounds like the way forward. The bottom ends are seriously strong, so just balance it, get some hot cams made up, and you'll hit that kinda power pretty easily (albeit at 10,000rpm!). Getting the 24v heads will help a lot there, but of course the cams will cost more.

well its gonna get a full do up so i wont need to worry bout the bottom end later on, i might leave the 12v head stock as it'll be gettin swapped if i find a peugeot 605, they must be rarer than my 360 down in Oz.

They're incredibly rare everywhere. Add together 6, 0 and 5, and you're somewhere near the total number sold worldwide....

Didn't think the 605 was THAT rare.. certainly still see a few around here - probably because they were made down the road in Coventry maybe?
