Fuel Catalyst Device?

Post by Kyuss » 22 Nov 2004 09:38 pm

Hey all,

I havn't figured out how to add my details to the left of my message, so my car is an Australian '84/'85 360 GLT with a B200E. I have read on your forum (and a mighty good resource it is) that you can run these engines - well at least the B200's predecessor - on unleaded as long as it is 97 RON or higher.

Firstly, can you confirm that the engine was designed for leaded fuel, as I have only just bought it and have not yet needed to buy fuel for it.

If so, do you believe that it is a good idea to use an in-tank or in-line fuel catalyst device so that balls grade unleaded can be used as well as premium unleaded and the detonation will still be more stable and less damaging to the engine?

Thanks,
kyuss

you should be able to use any sort of unleaded in yer car without any probs at all (95 ron or higher, which is the lowest we can get over here)

Hello, the in-line fuel devices are a total no-no. They were tested a few years ago and were found to be useless. Various fuel additives have also been tested and the approved ones can be found on the following web-site

http://www.fbhvc.co.uk/fueladds.htm

I am not sure if a mid-80's car will have hardened valve-seats for unleaded petrol, but certainly all of the late-80's cars can be run on unleaded or superunleaded without an additive.

My car was fitted with a Broquet-style device when 4* went out...I'm also sure it does absolutely nothing, but it didn't seem to be worth removing it.

Running 97/98 octane is the 'safe' option...but you ought to be OK with 95 octane.

cheers

Thanks lads, that is bad news about the in-line fuel catalysts, because I have a '66 ford that i was counting on this for with LRP being phased out this year...

We must be behind the world in these sort of things, as the aftermarket Auto places here are only now starting to promote these devices. Seems we havn't had the "current affair" cycle on these products yet, to tell us they are useless or in fact will damage your engine as they invariably will.

The crap thing here is that the standard grade unleaded petrol is 91RON and premium 94 or 95, with only BP and Shell selling 97/98RON PULP for > $1 per litre.

I just received a couple of the haynes manuals (the '76-'85 and the '76-'87) as well as an '85 and an '88 owners manual.

These have differentiated between a B200E (628) and a B200E (938) which to my eye, is just a lower compression version (and will allow use of sh*ttier ULP fuel).

How can I determine which variant my new acquisition has.

Thanks again.

Just so you know, that's about 41p over here...

and HALF the price of petrol here, with £0.82/litre being the cheapest you will find (or atleast in birmingham!)

American's were protesting when "gas" went over $2 a GALLON!

Christ,

OK - me stop bitching about petrol prices now. I certainly wouldn't enjoy paying $2 per litre for it. I think I would be riding my bicycle a hell-of-a-lot more...
