How much extra do you pay for engine swap?

Post by Ajb » 02 Dec 2008 05:21 pm

I am interested in the reanult 19 1.8 swap for a 1.7 340 and was just wondering how much extra other people where paying for there swaps and how friendly insurance companies are when declaring it?

Also are there any insurance companies which are better then others for this?

Thanks

Good idea to declare it with insurance, as you'll probably void your policy otherwise. Trouble is - a lot of mainstream insurers won't touch modifications such as engine swaps - or will charge you the earth.

I used Adrian Flux Insurance a few years back when I modified My 740SE.

AS to how much a garage would charge.. it depends on how tricky they think it'l be - plus at least 50quid an hour or thereabouts.

May be cheaper to rent an engine hoist - depends on how confident you feel.

Yea my main concern is just what the insurance rate would change to and who is best to go with. Il have to give flux a call.

Looking at some other websites it seems they judge it by the insurance group of the car the engine came from , anyone know if this true?

I have heard (3rd hand as well, so don't trust it too much ;) ) that if a car has an engine swap, the quote from some insurers will be the average between a quote for the car with original engine, and the car from which the swapped engine came from.

I.e If you had a 340 with an engine from a Clio, they'd do a quote for the standard 340, and a quote for the standard Clio, and split the difference.

Reading these I'm so glad that the insurance companies in here don't care about the modifications you make on your car.. My 360 turbo is insured by stock 360GLT B200E. :P

When i renewed my insurance i declared my new engine. It went from £200 a year for a 1.4 340 DL on a limited milage policy, to £513 for the 1.8 with all the suspension mods declared. i lowered the milage too 3000 a year and that dropped it to aroun £450.

They did say that if i uprate the brakes the insurance would drop.
Thats with Adrian Flux.
