Engine Question (9-series)

Post by Steelballz » 12 Mar 2009 02:00 pm

lads, found a goldmine (i think) at the local mechanic's, a 940 (or 960, not sure lol)...and its got a 2.2 or 2.3 turbo petrol engine, again not sure which it is but fairly sure where I gave it a quick glance the taxdisc said 2.2....

I did a bit of research on the interweb, and this one seemed the most appropriate out of the engine list...

"B230FK: 2.3 L inline-4, turbocharged, Low Pressure Turbo ('95-)"

if thats it, is it a good engine..?(ie will it take kindly enough to a welded diff and a bit of "fun"???) :?

btw, where do I find the engine code on a volvo (ie where on the block exactly), sorry for the stupid question... sm1

That is one of the best redblocks there are because it's late model (FK's always are) so it has strong 13mm conrods so with good tune stock bottom end can handle +400hp, it probably also has oil squirters for pistons too which is a good thing.

So yeah it is a good engine. :P

Hmm, saw no engine code there the last day... :?

I'll try and organise some pictures one of these days (maybe even tomorrow), and then someone may be able to give concrete info about it...?

Yep that's a good engine for tuning that, low boost but either the HPT actuator or MBC and 12psi will sort that. Thicker 13mm conrods and oil squirters too!

@classicswede AND SteveP:

I would, but for a €250 "messing-car" I dont wanna spend money on an adjustable actuator...(or bent the rod of the standard one either...)

I just meant an actuator off a HPT car.. which will basically be free under £10 from a breaker! Manual Boost Controller for about £40, well worth the expense for the gains!!

and you also explain where I am to put a bleed valve, and why...does it actually up the boost...?? :?:

High Pressure Turbo. There were two versions of the engine, one was restricted. By fitting the higher pressure actuator you'd have the power of an HPT.

The wastegate of the turbo opens when a certain boost pressure is reached. There is a pressure feed to the wastegate actuator to 'tell it when to open'. By fitting a bleed valve you allow air to escape, reducing the pressure that the actuator sees, delaying the opening of the wastegate and increasing the maximum boost pressure.

hmm, I'd probably choose the HPT actuator then......But how do I know which one my engine is, as the link in my forst post is what wikipedia told me...So I'm unsure if mine's the low or high pressure turbo, can it be told from the B230FK engine code, or what..?

your b230fk will be a low boost pressure variant of the b230 and has a td04-13c turbo on it iirc, the boost ought to be at 4psi stock and you should be able to carefully raise that to 12psi-ish as the block is exactly the same (and most other bits I think, haven't looked into turbos engines for a while!!), in fact I think the whole engine is exactly the same as a b230ft just running @ 4psi instead of HPT boost levels. -Though you should check this as I'm not 100% sure and can't be bothered to check it myself :)

B230FK is 3.5psi IIRC ;) You may even be able to run 14psi with super unleaded  :D
