To James, Mj, Chris c, Steve P, Pete & everyone else,
thanks guys - you're all stars - maybe you realise, maybe you don't - but when you don't know much about cars really & you're not minted & you're not into just throwing stuff away & "getting a new one", when your car breaks down, it can get pretty depressing; to set about trying to fix it yourself needs a mindset that you can't necessarily switch on & off - then if what you do works & your car actually works again, it really is like magic - to me anyway. It's like alchemy! ok I know they are machines & they break & they can be fixed but I'm talking about the mental conditions that are involved in the whole process - despair, resolve, concentration, hope & finally joy - in that context, I see it as magic & magic is a worthwhile thing to seek as far as I can see.
You guys, the site & most of all I think the attitude of the site existing - that idea that they can't seem to kill off, try as they might, that people want to communicate, discuss, advise, help others in a communal way toward certain goals - I think that is special - so I believe that you're all engaged in something good & honorable.
I felt that that is worth saying if only as a reminder to anyone that this isn't just a "boys n toys" enterprise here; the site won't save the world but it will & can change moods & fix cars and I, for one, am damn happy about that.
En fin, I salute you.
Viva el 300Mania!! :D

I realise ;)

I started doing my own work on my cars (seriously, as opposed to the small detailing stuff, like new stereo's etc) when I got to uni, and the only way I could afford to run a car was to cut all costs that I could. Started with small things like services with the haynes, and now after 4 years have lost any kind of fear of playing with cars, especially with this place as a safety net.

My 1.7 I bought as a non runner, for spares, only had a play last summer as something to do (well, I needed a tow car at the time). Got it working, but not superbly, but that was enough, like all milestones in projects, the satisfaction is there and amazing. Since I've had to bring it into service as my daily, theres been a lot of help on here and I've taken in as much as I can, and learnt from it.

Most of us here are self taught, a lot students, but we have the pleasure to also have a fair few really experienced guys from a lot of different fields.

All of us have areas of experience that we can offer up, thats the important bit.

You are right, what atmosphere we have on this forum is sweet, and I think most of us realise we are lucky.

I'm dead chuffed you've fixed the car, granted you had a few pointers, but in the long run, you sourced the bits, you did the recon, and you made it run.

Knowledge gained... lots. Confidence gained... lots. Net result... £45 down, but now have spares just in case. Meh, 45quid... it's a tank of petrol! Probably saved you that the first 2 times you filled up after fixing it.

Cheers Chris,
yeah you're right, I must have saved the £45 already, easy....I'm an easy driver so I thought the 340 did well on gas (given that it is a tank - no offence to the old girl!) before the MOT failure, but the idling had always been off, I knew that but it kept going, not one prob, apart from last autumn - and all I did then was clean sparks & fit a new Dist cap - that sorted it - but since the new carb & my adjustment of it, it is smooth, no cutting out, perfect starting , perfect idling & tonnes of extra miles on a tank (my odometeer doesn't work so I can only estimate!).
I'm generally really busy so I just try to keep a car going rather than trying to fix all small imperfections but if I can get some time I want to see how far I can go with this car because I really love it...and if things go really badly at any point I'm already resolved to getting another one after this one - that's if some lunatics have scrapped them all by then! I might even see if I can remove the stereo & install one that does work....then again!
I'll try to watch out for any of those gatherings I noticed, think that might be fun to meet some of the people on the site, although I think they might rip the piss a bit due to the shabby nature of my doors!! another possible project if I had the time!
Thanks again Chris - I shall try to emulate you & others like you if I can - I love the way that the guys modulate their responses according to the level of experience of the person with the prob, rather than patronising them....I've been on other sites, not necessarily cars, where you can't understand anything because the level is so high...anyway I'm a rambler so I'll stop rambling...
See you
Volvopandy / Andy O
