R-Sport Carb setup
hi
Re the VOC
as with any club they need young blood to be involved otherwise the club will just fizzle out as people retire and dont work on their cars anymore
they need to welcome with enthusiasm new and younger members. the performance section seems to be a vibrant actiive part of the cliub and represents the new type of knowledge needed to performance tune modern cars eg ecu work etc
I think a letter stating that the club needs to be more pro-active in welcoming younger people is a good idea. i havent experienced any of the conflict between older and younger members. in my experience, club members have always been very friendly and welcoming to me as a younger person. i've not experienced any problems, however, a letter gently ( dont get stroppy coz they will get p'd off and ignore you ) explaining the importance of younger and older club members working together is a good idea
also
the large 340 turn out at the voc event is a good idea.... there are usually only 1 or 2 340s there usually
a letter saying 'support and integrate the younger members" and then soon after a load of 340s turns up to the meeting kinda says "told you so... see there are young members!!"
i;d also like to ask all guys to please come to the next volvo enthusiasts club meeting. its a smaller club and everyone is really friendly and we could do with some more cars coming along.
a 300mania and volvo enthusiasts club joint event sounds nice.....

Hi Shimon,
It would help if there was actually some info out there on the VEC - I've tried several times to find out more, and there is very little info about. I've also heard (let it be said quietly) that it is more or less a one man show (and a rather opinionated man at that!)...which isn't encouraging. I'd love to meet with these guys, but the last thing we need is more know-it-alls!
The VOC PCS is a healthy thing, but they're rather short of people who really know their stuff. Most people couldn't care less and are very friendly, but a couple of misguided souls (not particularly people I've ever met) seem hell bent on persuading people that chip tuning is the only way forward, and that anything else is redundant. My question to that is what happens when you want more than the 300bhp offered by the tuning chips?
I guess I should announce it now...I've finalised my plan for Nessy. She'll be getting a rebuilt (and built up) T5 motor, with big rods, forged bottom end, programmable EMS, and a turbo which makes yo mamma's butt look small. This has two advantages...
1) The whiteblock has the potential to make more power than an 8v redblock, and a 16v turbo redblock is a PITA to make...plus it weighs more. Since I'll need to put uprated internals in a redblock anyway, there's no saving to be made in using one, so I'll take the weight saving, the native 4-valve head, and make some big power!
2) It'll make the point once and for all (to some people who don't wanna hear it) that chip tuning is only good for mild upgrades, as I'm planning on laying down somewhere in the 4-600bhp range (at the wheels), and there won't be a chipped ECU in sight.
Of course all this is a long way off, so we'll have to see how the project progresses...but that's the plan. Phase one is to acquire premises (or at least some drive space!) in which to work on the car!
cheers
James

Sounds really good, T5 with over 400hp and car that weights just about 1000kg, mmmm. That would be nice to annoy few motorcycles at traffic lights
Do you already know what gearbox/differential you are going to use?
Even M90 gearbox could be too fragile, but of course low weight helps a bit.
Have you plans for ecu already? Megasquirt, Genboard or something more commercial product?

I will clearly need a new drivetrain! The only condition I have laid out so far is that I want to retain the transaxle layout...other than that, it's entirely open to ideas! The engine will be built to rev, so torque shouldn't be too huge...but then I am thinking of using nitrous...
Where was this 550+ whiteblock?
I would quite like ECU controlled boost....so Autronic? MSnS and an EBC is another option, but it's not quite so neat.
cheers

The whiteblock in question was a customer at work with an ex toyo cup 850 T5-R, we fitted and mapped the management and fitted nitrous, mainly as anti-lag. We cant actualy tell what power it makes, as the 2wd dyno tops out at 480 bhp, but it tops it out at 4000rpm and is still over that at the 7400 limiter, with the gas coming in at 3000. It runs an all steel bottom end, forged pistons worked head, cams, equal length manifold with the turbo over the gearbox etc etc... I dont know to much of the spec's as the owner built the engine, but it will aparently take 2.2 bar boost, which is what he aims to run, but at the moment it runs 1.6bar because above that the manifold starts to set fire to things under the bonnet....... I think in a road car 500 bhp (flywheel) would be the top limmit, any more is only going to cause more trouble than its worth, in an 850 with a trick diff, this will cause 90 mph burnouts in 4th............. In a 300 I recon you could get the front wheels off the deck

Oooh...sounds like fun! However, I think I've just figured out who it is...well...I have a strong hunch anyway. Someone big on the scene who has been very quiet of late (heck...no-one here will know!)
Speaking of which...there's a discussion going on at the moment on the VOC forum about a T5 with a Turbo Technics hybrid T28 which I believe you guys have just mapped....and which gave peak power of 195bhp at 4500rpm, which seems on target if it truly peaks at 6500 or so, but measured at a lower RPM. Was there some clever dyno trickery at play here? Perhaps it's more appropriate to drop me an email. I'll not be commenting on it...I was just curious!
cheers

There's one nice whiteblock powered 850.
Copied this from the other forum.
"
överladdad's 850 does 80-180 kmh in roughly 6 seconds.
McLaren F1 : 6.7s
Lamborghini Diablo VS : 6.9s
Ferrari 550 : 7.0s
Porsche 911 GT1 : 7.5s
Corvette (year unknown) : 11.4s
Merc E60 AMG : 11.5s

You could call that quick...
Would be nicer in RWD though.

The 850 with the gt28 hybrid was not mapped by us, I just did a quick power run for the guy, the car is totaly stock bar the turbo and a chip, also it is an automatic and the figures are power at the wheels not the flywheel, the power peak was early as the boost tailed off at the top end of the revrange, and it was starting to pink past 5000rpm causing the ecu to retard the timing, realy, the car needs a good exhaust system and some tweeking of the mapping............... with reference to the big power car, does S.W. mean anything?

At the wheels! That makes a lot of sense...as does the need for a remap (heck, it would, wouldn't it!).
SW doesn't mean anything to me, so I think I'd best just shut up...
Phil Wright was the person I was thinking of, as I'm aware he was turning his T5-R into a track day car. Personally, I'd use the R on the road, then buy a seven with a T5 engine for the track
cheers

I'll tell you who s.w. is at the meet, if you know norchi and phill then you'll proberbly know him!! a seven with a t5 engine, your talking lotus seven right? hmm..... 550 bhp white block in a car that weighs 600 kilos, even with my maths, thats getting on 1000 bhp a ton, That would be fast enough to knock you unconcious

That'd be the plan...although a standard T5 lump in a (yes, Lotus) Seven would kick arse!
