Mine (B14) was a piece of piss...

...except that one of the engine mount bolts was rounded, making it impossible to remove the engine mount (without drilling it, as far as I could see)...making it VERY hard to get the bellhousing off! :(

Clutch is in....just need to reassemble.

cheers

Know that I know what to do, this is a fairly easy clutch change.. what makes it really hard is the fact that the shop sold me the wrong clutch and I cant change it till tomorrow.

so another day without being able to do anything... should now be done tomorrow....

its a 26 spline clutch plate rather than a 20 spline plate, so it doesn't fit over the bellhousing.

the 340 has 2 clutch options

2 clutch options??? two options for the 1.4??

was there a year it changed?

bit worrying.... Im working at my friends workshop to do the clutch on my J reg 340. I got a Ferrodo clutch off ebay... I hope it wont be one of those situations where the clutch is dismantled and I realise Ive got the wrong part..............

PHEW!!

but... did the clutch change occur when the 'late 1.7' was launched... ie the one with the different cambelt... there is a post here about two different types of cam belt for the 1.7... one for the early engines with the metal cambelt comver and one for the engines with a plastic? cover

Im interested in getting rid of the cambelt on my 1.7 and fitting a chain drive

The only reason manufacturers moved to cambelts instead of chains was because belts are quieter and I guess cheaper also but they are a hassle when you are trying to keep an old car!! coz they only have a finite shelf life so you cant keep some in a cupboard for use in years time coz belts need changing due to milage OR age.......... just a random extra thought there!!

The 1.7 was a bit of an after thought for the 340... the car wasnt designed from the outset with the intention of it being a 1.7.... so the 1.7s are bit un-volvo in some areas such as clutch and steering rack change... ie these jobs arent as easy with things not being so easy to get to like on the 1.4 or other bigger volvos... still compared to most cars the 1.7 is still good to work on..

good luck with the clutch!

No it was not with the engine type cahnge but came a little later on 1990 models but the books seem to list 89 models as having the later clutch. The the 89's I know of use the early coars spline one.
