I did think about it!

thats just cause you've nearly Frankinsteined the car back into life. You need the thunderstorm for atmospheric effect.
Might be a bit early though.

Now THAT"S a floater:D
EDIT: I notice it looks a little lopsided in the pic, that's not the case in reality, this really is a frikin nice floater:D
Re: 1.7 340 not starting...... Any help appreciated!
Well oh my god, its' not working still.
Installed new float, set it at 33.8mm (well, as close as I could get without precision measuring devices) from gasket to top of float, with the carb top upside down... Float chamber breather is about 2mm. All back together again, and it started, but was NOT happy at all. Juddering, wanting do die, and only working at all with the choke all the way out, when took the choke off it died straight away. With revs, it seemed normal though. Smokey too.
After it died, it wouldn't start again.
I tried starting it yesterday after I pulled the carb apart.. It was exactly the same. I assumed it was because I'd randomly fiddled with the float height trying to get my head around setting it right, and fuel wasn't getting to it or something silly.. But today with the new float set at the correct height its' doing the same thing... So I think its' something that happened when I took the carb apart, although i've no idea what it could be. All I did was take it off the car, take the top off, take out and play with the float, then put it back together just as I found it. I am totally baffled, and quite annoyed....
So yeah, anyhows.. I checked for sparks one last time and its' all good, some wet on the plugs though I think, and the (brand new) plugs have gone real black with soot already. Checked for fuel in the float chamber, its' there.. Not as high in the chamber as before the new float, about this high, maybe a touch lower, it's not a very good pic:

Yeah, I realize now it would've been much easier to just go outside and take a pic!!
So basically I must've done something to the carb while it was off, but I've NO idea what. Arrrgh god, this is frustrating.

Re: 1.7 340 not starting...... Any help appreciated!
fuel level seems ok in pic
mixture setting sounds wrong, maybe due to the leak floater someone has been fiddling around with it.
reset idle screw (reached trough the hole in the air filter housing) to make it run, then take her to a garage and reset the CO levels.

Cheers dude:D
Well just now I took the carb off and checked everything, put it all back together again, and it's back to normal!?! Very strange.. I don't know if the original problem still exists, but I'm just off to take it for a run.. I'll know 30 min to an hour after I get back if it's solved or not.. Touch wood:D
I'm glad you mentioned the idle screws, I was wondering where they lived.. It seems to idle (and always has) a touch low, resulting in a bit of engine wobble and vibrations etc. The smallest bit of throttle stops it, hopefully a little play with the idle screw will see it idling just right!
I was also wondering what the hole in the air filter was for, and now I know, sweeet!
I can't wait to get a 16v in there, I'm never quite going to fully trust this engine again after all this:D

Just tested it, 45 minutes after a run.. It wouldn't start. ARGH.

is it haunted or something?Jonofdoom wrote:Just tested it, 45 minutes after a run.. It wouldn't start. ARGH.
Think its the only credible explanation.
Youve changed more parts than ive ever even seen.
i feel your pain.
Though have absolutley no experience of a 300 failing to start.
I get a bit angry if mine takes two spins.

Re: 1.7 340 not starting...... Any help appreciated!
first adjusting mixture, then enjoy. get it to a garage mate and adjust co and idle to perfection.
idle 900 rpm
CO between 1% and 1.5% on idle.

CO between 1% and 1.5% on idle.

^Cheers, getting the thing to start reliably is still the problem though, daaaammit.
I think it may well be haunted.. Not pleased...
