Same old B14 VArio running probs (again)

The cars developed more pressing problems.

Now this has only happened on the last quarter of a 15ish mile journey (there AND back) today.

Symptoms:

In pressing the accelerator when cruising, nothing immediatly happens. Theres a pause, then theres a surge of power (accelerator held steady), then power drops, then surges. This carries on unless you really gun it. Really gunning it brings stready acceleration. Untill you back off.

Theres a sound from somewhere underneath that John recons sounds like the bellhouse bearing being fooked. (again, this sound only manifests after 20-30 mins running.

The car is hard to start from warm and withought throttle, will die immediatly.

Seemed to struggle at junctions, a LITTLE bit, but never stalled on the road. Only when I got to destination, turned ignition off and tried to restart.

Might be worth noting its very hot today.

Got a long journey planned tomorow.

Anyone have any Ideas?

Vacuum leak?
Ignition?

Gonna check the ignition bits I can tonight, could do with advice on how to find and remedy a leek, if thats what it is?

doesnt always work mind :oops:

IN all fairness, spray some easystart round and pipes that look sketchy and listen for any chance in engine note.

the jerking under acceleration could be carb float, or float valve sticking.

though if the 340 has a centrifugal clutch that could well be suspect as it may give the sounds you desicribe. the jerking being the weights/friction pads engaging, then not with the clutch housing OR thinking aloud here, the housing that the friction pads expand out on could be oval giving the same effect.......

probably of no use but thought id chip in!

No.
I did the exact opposite.

I made it far, far worse.

Mission: check carb bolts are tight.

What a actually happened:

Overtightened one, stripped it, took it out, stared at it, tried to put it back in as best I could.
Then - took it for a test drive.

Lots of rattling. Thats not good.
Got stuck in traffic.
More rattling, hard to keep engine running.
Limped home, engine dies.

Can anyone guess what happened?

Well, I popped the air filter cover off and noticed there was a carb bolt washer missing.
Oh dear.
Think thats fallen into the carb without me realising then. And now its somewhere in the engine.


Which all adds up to quite a large fail.

Back to public transport for a while then.

im not even going to comment

i seem to remember some one with a b14 on here that you could drop in. or FJ drop in :mrgreen:

could do that in a day i recon, only simple engines!!

bad luck Ben, but that engine is probably KIA. had the same thing a few years back, and the "new" grooves in the liners were way out of tolerance.

another B14 of the same model (and if the donor is a cvt too) can be in and running in 1,5 hour. i dare anyone to beat that record (and work alone offcourse) :wink:

Not THAT interesting man. :lol:
Wait and see.
If it doesnt come off, it'll be a b14 straight swap.

Problem is, its the RR gathering this weekend, Liams up to his back teeth in turbo swappage awesomeness and Johns got the manta to fiddle up.

So its just a matter of waiting patiently for a break in the storm of work and other commitments.
Theres talk of work begining shortly though, which is more exiting than xmas coming early.
