Noisy when turning left

Post by volvo300 » 13 Oct 2010 09:07 pm

Hi all.

I'm having a really big problem!
My R-sport isn't that sporty at the moment! I upgraded to polys bushes (alle that Dai can provide), new GLT springs and new dampers in the spring, but since then I have had a BIG problem!!!!

Every time I turn left (weight is on the right side of the car) there is a great, sort of rumble, comming from the right front wheel
When I inspect the right inner wing, there is no sign of the wheel rubbing against anything?

I can't seem to locate the error!
I have changed the following (and one thing at the time)
- All the bushes back to Org. Volvo rubber (new)
- Swapped the springs from obe side to the other
- Swapped the dampers from one side to the other

Nothing helps ?????? :(

What can be wrong?
Can it be wheel alignment? It only makes arumble sound when I turn left... Not when I turn right ??

Help is needed.

Cheers.
Peter

Hi Mate,
my 360 glt makes a similar noise to what you re describing, on mine its coming from the front left spring that was not seated properly when my dad changed the front dampers!

not wheel bearing?

i get a rumble from the back left when i turn right, i thought it might be the wheel bearing as i've not played with the suspension yet

Hi all.

Thanks for the quick replys

Tonight I have replaced the GLT springs with the org. springs.
GLT springs length: 320mm
Org. springs length: 375mm

It now sits 30mm higher than before, but that's OK if the rumble goes away.........
.... But it's NOT gone
The rumble is still there, but not as noisy as before??

I noticed that the wheel alignment is a little bit better than before...
The front wheels still has toe-out (instead of toe-in) but not as much as before.....

The only thing I can suspect now is the alignment!

Cheers.

check the wheel bearings,

as you turn right the left wheel wants to move away from the car and the right wheel wants to come towards the car.

if the right front wheelbearing has too much play due to wear or similar, when you make a left turn the right front wheel wants to move away off the car, the hub moves outwards due to the bearing's play and will vibrate freely in that space.

how to check front suspension/bearings:
- lift the front wheels off the ground and secure the car on for example axle stands so that the car's wheels will stay off the ground.
- hold both your hands vertically on the tire and try to move the tire towards you and away from you; this is a main test for the lower ball joint
- hold both your hands horizotally on the tire and try to move the tire towards you and away from you; this is a main test for the track rod ends

if you have play both horizotally and vertically besides the balljoints the wheelbearing comes suspect, to diagnose the wheelbearings; put a finger on the spring and rotate the wheel around fast; if you feel the spring vibrating the bearings need replacing.

to make sure it isn't the balljoints these require further inspection, this can be done by looking at the balljoints and moving the suspension bits that it is attached to to see if there is play.

Hi Anjo.

Thanks for the reply.
How's everything going?

I have changed the lower ball joint and the track rod end (both new items). I did that in the spring together with all of the other new stuff that came onto the car (polys, GLT springs etc.).
I have tried different wheel bearings (all old but not bad).
I will try the bearing test method.

I noticed that when I changed to the old org. springs (higher than the GLT springs), the noise wasn't that high as before.
I also noticed that the wheel alignment was different (has moved around a bit due to all of the mounting / dismantling of the track rod end).

Hi karibakid.

I also had this probolem once... But I learned from that experience, so that's not the issue..
But thanks for the input.

Cheers.

Hi again.

Found the problem in the late summer last year.

It was the engine mount in the right side that was worn.... It was too loose and when turning left the front exhaust pipe hit the front suspension and that's what made the noise....
I had a pair of new mounting (the org. ones made from rubber) and they went on... Then NO problems at all :-)

Sorry for the late reply on this issue, but I have had too much to do lately.

Regards.

I presume you mean the suspension crossmember. Its common in 360s (non-PAS) for the exhaust to touch this. The original downpipe in mine worked fine, but the dealer replacement touched occasionally. Very common with aftermarket downpipes. I actually cut the corner off the radius arm part that goes under it, gave me another 3mm or so.

Hi again.

Yes, that's correct.
In my case it was not a new exhaust issue, but a worn engine mount.
