The garage who did the work for me lowered the transmission so as not to cut the floor, but I have read that the latter approach is probably the quickest way of doing it. You only need to remove the console if you cut the floor, I think.
The bit that fails is the right hand flat part of 34. If you do facebook, the V3M'ers there know loads about this job. Driving without the centre console will not be a problem, I think. I can't remember how to remove it but it's the usual case of finding and removing hidden screws and I don't recall that it is very hard.
