think it is dextron 3 ATF reccomended, or 10w40. 10w40 is quieter but more 'agricultural'

To change the oil is simple, drain plug out the bottom off the gearbox, once its all out - plug back in. Fill up slowly (especially on 5-speeds) through filler plug on cover at left hand side of gearbox, let it settle for 5 mins, top up if neccecary. Torques for plugs is 42NM iirc :)

2nd was always a bit poor in 300s. I doubt changing the oil will make any difference. Crunching is unusual though, most likley clutch is sticky. Does the drive shaft stop when you put the clutch in? Just open the driver door and listen for it.

Unless the car has had a hard life you should not have any wear problems, with synchros etc.

I have a slight baulk on first and an even slighter, occasional one on second. I changed the transmission fluid, and it made no noticeable difference. But still, it’s an easy job and probably worth doing anyway unless you’re going to replace the gearbox soon.
7.52pm: I'm jealous. I really wish that I was a) a Fulham fan; and b) at Craven Cottage. What a night for them. The players are still on the pitch, loving it.
