STARTER MOTOR MAKES A CHOKING SOUND?
STARTER MOTOR MAKES A CHOKING SOUND?
I recently replaced my old starter motor with one from a scrappy, it starts fine but initially makes a short, sharp choking noise. I spoke to a friend of mine who used to work at a local main volvo dealer back in the day and he suggested removing it and putting some oil into the opening part that connects to the car?

I take it the starter gear is not returning on release of the key by the sound of that. Check how freely it will slide and a bit of light oil on there could help.

Re: STARTER MOTOR MAKES A CHOKING SOUND?
It may not be just a lack of oil...but start there.
A few months ago I had a starter doing the same as described.
I removed it and behold the bronze bushings at each end had deteriorated to the point where the starter shaft was cockeyed in the housing.
A good cleaning and replacement bushings later the starter is new again.

I've no idea what a choking sounds is, but you can strip it down fairly easily, maybe swap over the solenoid from your old one.

Re: STARTER MOTOR MAKES A CHOKING SOUND?
Is the solenoid the small cylinder like drum that sits on the top of the bulkier main unit?...

Re: STARTER MOTOR MAKES A CHOKING SOUND?
Why would it make a difference swapping the solenoid as the spare one I have is on my old starter motor which completely stopped working a few months back?

Re: STARTER MOTOR MAKES A CHOKING SOUND?
I don't think that swapping the solenoid will help you all that much. TBH I reckon you need to strip the entire starter out and see what's happening.
But before you go to all that trouble, just make sure the starter is in completely straight, and there's no rusty bits on the mating surfaces between the starter and the clutch housing. If the starter and the flywheel are very slightly out of alignment then the Bendix gear might be jamming slightly and not slipping back out as it should. Its unlikely but worth checking because its a lot easier than trying to take apart the starter.
So apart from that, you'll need to take apart the starter and start checking bearings for play and float. If its been off a car for ages or sat in a scrappy getting damp and rusty, no knowing how much rubbish is in the places where nice shiny metal should be, so you might need to strip the whole lot down clean off all the old sticky oil/grease and re-lubricate it properly.
Good luck.
What was wrong with the old one? Can you swap parts about from the two duff ones to make one good one?

Re: STARTER MOTOR MAKES A CHOKING SOUND?
To be honest with you I wouldn't know how to strip a starter motor down. Im gonna try re-aligning it and then if that doesnt work just live with the noise until it packs up completely and then get another one from the scrappy...

Re: STARTER MOTOR MAKES A CHOKING SOUND?
Check for play in the bushes or you will end up shreading the starter ring on the flywheel.

That's what I said earlierclassicswede wrote:Check for play in the bushes or you will end up shreading the starter ring on the flywheel.
I took mine to a rebuild shop, because I also do not have the proper knowledge. $ 80.00 and within two days it was returned in perfect working order.
A complete service to the windings, interior cleaning, installed new bronze bushings at both ends, bench tested the bendix/solenoid operation and repainted the outside...
Plus I received a full year warrantie on the work.

Re: STARTER MOTOR MAKES A CHOKING SOUND?
I know that's on a 1108, but is there (I can't see) anything holding up the right-hand end of the motor in the picture there John?
Re: STARTER MOTOR MAKES A CHOKING SOUND?
Not supposed to be anything holding up the right side of a starter Rich.....3 bolt mounting at the bendix side only.

Please tell me what bracket #28 is and what it does?
They are long AND heavy those old long-case starters, the pinion gears on them however are not as deep and they don't seem to suffer from the "stuck in mesh whine" that the later short-case motors do.
