Bendy carburettors

Post by mac » 06 Jan 2013 04:49 pm

A well known, and very common problem with the Solex CISAC Z10 used on the B172k engine is its unerring ability to distort not only the insulation block but also the base of the carb itself. This leads to air leaks and general poor running.

During it's service life Volvo introduced a modification kit consisting of a replacement (green coloured) insulation block with a metal shim gasket coated with moulded rubber to fit between the block and the carb. When fitting the kit the thin insulator (between the main insulation block and the manifold was dispensed with and replaced by a "normal" gasket.
This kit was alleged to compensate for up to 2.0mm of distortion and in fairness it did seem to work as advertised. (the problem was cost - the Volvo price was almost £100.00 for the parts alone!)

This kit has been NLA from Volvo for many years.

I have now found a source of a limited number kits (in fact the green block and the rubber/shim gasket) lacking only the gasket to go between the block and the manifold. A further difference is the engine breather connection (brass tube) is not fitted to the block.(block is pre drilled and the "old" tube must be transferred).

I have bought a couple of these kits and they are indeed identical to the Volvo parts. Over the next week or so I intend to trial fit a kit to my Redline (I will also rebuild the carb at the same time and start a photo/doc thread detailing the work)
If I am unable to source a suitable block to manifold gasket I shall produce some.

Assuming the kit fits as expected I shall "publish" the source of supply (but bear with me until I have test fitted a sample).
It is expected that the two part kit will cost in the region of £20.00.

I will keep the forum updated.

Amazingly cheap! Let's hope the results are good, I might get another 1.7 one day. Can get good mileage out of them too I believe if setup correctly?

Good news that, a sensible solution for the distorsion.

I'd been considering converting to SU's as I prefer them but this simple cheap solution would look to be the way forward if it works.

The kit works!

Available from Webcon ( http://www.webcon.co.uk ) 01932 787100 VOC/V3M contact Martin Eva.
Webcon part no.S61644530 price £16.02 + vat and carriage. Current stock 100.
You will also need a "normal" gasket to go between the insulating block and the manifold.
I shall produce these in due course.

If you're feeling rich Webcon also have 3 new 28-34 Z10 carburettors in stock (no more - ever)
Webcon part no.S14209000 price £292 + vat and carriage.
They did have 4 but I've bagged one.

When I'm feeling better (waiting for MRI scan at the mo) I'll fully detail the fitting proceedure in my Redline rebuild thread but in the meantime make do with the following pics.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't tempted to pick one up, if it works it will take the 1.7 from the best all round engine in a 300 when it's running to just the best option.

On the other hand, the last thing I need is another 1.7!

Mac, don't get worked up, bad for the BP.
It is clear that we'll need to add it to the BBB collection / Bolt shop.
People will only buy when they need it, not when everybody else is sure that they will need it.
A 100 sets is a bit steep for a bulk buy don't you think? sm4

There is an interest but as with most things they will only be replaced as needed.

The info is usefull and could do with adding to the available parts list :D

Trouble is that many people don't see the bigger picture. For the sake of not spending out getting their car running properly, they're quite happy throwing tons of extra fuel into the tank instead! Remember folks that even a 'lean running' carb that's lean cos its faulty will ultimately lose you MPG!
