360 engine mounts
360 engine mounts
poped my head under the 360 today and straight away noticed a problem, sump touching the roll bar,
so obvs its going to be the engine mount, couldnt see so stuck the old fone up there and took a few snaps to find this
sure that rubber was inside last time i took the mount off lol,
dont know if this is a common thing on the 360? i suspect on mine it has something to do with the extra weight of the b230fk lump and down to what the car is used for and age.
question is do i just look for a replacement (if theres still any knocking about?) or do i have something made? or ive heard of people just makeing there own out of whatever there useing? im after some ideas/designs of engine mounts i could have made, could i have a solid mount made? maybe just on the turbo side? i know it would cause alot or vibration but would it cause any problems or damage? it is a track car after all so not to fussed about it being comfy,
if anyones had this problem i would love to hear how you got round it.
thanks in advance

Re: 360 engine mounts
There's a good chance e torque and weight combined would rip a solid mount out of the car leaving bolt holes it would be a mission to fix.

Re: 360 engine mounts
hmm i would be worried about something going wrong with a solid
Re: 360 engine mounts
are the mounts oil filled?
Re: 360 engine mounts
I have a volvo 340 mate and the rear four diff and gearbox mounts are solid as well as the bell housing and I use mine for drifting ect and never broke anything, it's only a 1.4 but it gets plenty clutch kick. It's more noisy, you an here the prop spinning.and the gearbox lol but the handling transformed when I done the bell housing, amazing.
I would say go for it mate.

Re: 360 engine mounts
Are you still running 360 mounts or have you converted to 240 mounts with the turbo conversion?

Re: 360 engine mounts
Stock mounts are hydraulic ones. There are two chambers and there's a flow control disc between the two chambers.
Here's one mount which I cut up when I had the same problem as you did have.

340 structure is totally different from the 360 one as in 360 the whole engine hangs from the mounts and the engine mounts also supports the front weight of the whole drive train. Second mounts are at the gearbox end, so it's not anywhere near similiar as the setup is with 340 where the engine and the transaxle are separate units.
You can replace those 360 mounts with more simple mounts if you wan't but you have to make such mounts which are designed to withstand constant stress in application where something is hanging from the mount. This is the reason why you can't use normal sandwhich type rubber mount mount in place of a 360's hydraulic mount as if the sandwhich-type mount would fail, the whole engine would drop. Rubber mount has to be designed in a similiar way as the stock 360 hydraulic mount, so it is failsafe and will withstand the necessary forces. This means some kind of a casing for the rubber and also some kind of a support inside the rubber and casing which will hold the forces pulling the mount apart.
Easier way than making a failsafe rubber mount would be making new engine mount brackets in such way that engine is placed on top of the mounts, rather than hanging from them. Then you could use the common sandwhich type engine mounts. Here's a one example of this kind of conversion:

I chose it more experimental approach and drained the old mounts from fluids, put them on a vice and compressed those. Then I refilled the chambers with polyurethane adhesive and also the space between the metal casing and the rubber at the top. I used marine grade polyurethane adhesive (SikaFlex 291) and let the mounts cure for about a month.
I've driven with those now about ~50k km's and no problems what so ever. Engine sits at the height where it is supposed to be.
I don't see the solid mounts causing any problems other than vibration and noise as long as the mounts are made well and also the attatching points on the chassis and also at the engine side are up for the job. You might want to strengthen the mounts at the gearbox end also if you are going to put solid mounts in front as otherwise it might transfer the loads to the stock gearbox mounts too much.

Still useing 360 mounts mate, not actually heard of converting to 240 mounts? Any info would be much appreciated. Was wondering if theres anything you could do 360 engine mount wise?
Fuse, cheers for that, going to have a good look threw them pics, i did notice alot of oil on the mount when i took it off so thats y i suspected them to be oil filled, cheers for confirming it.
Cheers
Re: 360 engine mounts
anyone got any ideas? im abit stuck tbh as i cant find any 360 engine mounts, cant really replace it with jut solid mounts from what i can gather. i might just take it up to the guy who did my oil return and get some custom engine mounts made up? i would rather not spent money on expensive custom engine mounts but i cant see another way round it? even if i find some 360 mounts it might just happen again? and while its there i can get him to give it a check over and do tracking and check everythings straight etc.
whats this 240 mount conversion that dai speaks of?
cheers

Re: 360 engine mounts
Simple bracket fabrication and use the 240 engine side brackets.
