A Redline resurfaces. F882 gets fettled.

Post by mac » 09 Jan 2013 03:45 pm

OK chaps/chapesses I'll start this thread here as primarily it will start about carbs.
Those of you having read my "bendy carbs" post will know I have aquired a couple of "anti warp" kits for the Solex Z10,and having also aquired a 1.7 it seemed a good idea to
combine the recommissioning of the Redline with a rebuild of it's carb and the fitting of said kit.

The car - no movement yet although I do move her about the drive to let her know I care.

To make it easier to follow the work I have removed the inlet/exhaust manifold and will "bench" fit the kit for photo purposes.
the carb is notorious for warping the base, the base insulating block and indeed the inlet manifold carb mounting face.
Even on my low mileage Redline both the carb base and block are warped - but fortunately the manifold is perfect.

The manifold on the bench.

cont.

I won't presume to instruct you how to remove the carb but once on the bench dismantling may begin.

Release the insulating block by removing the arrowed screw. Note also the crankcase breather vacuum source.
This pipe must be removed and transferred to the kit insulator (which is pre drilled with a shaped hole).

Image

Clamp the pipe carefully in a vice and gently tap off the block. Clean the brass pipe.

Image

Remove the outer choke cable support.

Image

Remove the 5 setscrews securing the carb top to the body.

Image

Working now on the top plate, push out the float pivot pin.

Image

Remove the 4 screws holding the choke pull off servo and take out the spring. Remove the choke cam securing bolt (14mm)
and take care not to loose the tensioning spring and ball bearing.

Image
Image

Carefully unhook the choke pull off diaphram and remove.

Image

Remove the fuel inlet filter (12mm) and the float needle valve (11mm).

Image

Remove the idle jet.

All for today - TBC Mac.

The sun is out and methinks a few small jobs - reading back through the old MOT advisories on the Redline I find "surface corrosion evident at rear of n/s sill.

Hummmn - don't remember seeing anything but it's a nice day so I'll clean off the road dirt and see what's what.

Wash, solvent clean the tar spots, and wax polish both sills - they do come up like new! Oh, the "corrosion" was a dirty mark which washed off!

Now, just get Mrs.Mac to cut and machine polish the rest -

I like that :-) I wish my cars had more of those "dirty marks" ;-)

Well done Mac, and thanks for the usual excellent photos and "how to"'s ...

Good stuff Mac, looking forward to seeing it on the road in all its glory. Do you think it's feasible it may join us for the Bishops Stortford show later this year?
