exhaust on 1986 340 1.4 vario
Hi
I've notices that Lulu is getting more noisy than normal and the issue sounds like an exhaust blow. The exhaust on it is standard and seems fairly recent, however there is a leak somewhere near the front end.
Having a look underneath it seems to be in the area of the front box, but the downpipe looks pretty ancient, I've not had a chance to lie on my back and get a proper look as its been snowing/raining. Can anyone advise what parts I'd need? Should I just replace the whole lot? Or try and separate the system and replace piecemeal?
If it is the downpipe how does this come off and is there any special items that I'm going to need, gaskets, bolts etc? Also if it is the front box could this account for the back popping etc I've been hearing on the overrun?
It might sound like a daft question but how many parts is the exhaust on a non catted 1.4 1986 340 DL in?
Is it manifold, downpipe, front box, back box or is there more?

Depends on manufacturer of system or previous bodgery, but if we discount those two items, you have three pieces.
Downpipe - middle section - rear section

Right, been on ebay and ordered new downpipe, VOG6 Gasket, mid box and back box. Managed to get two of the URN5 rubbers , so just need clamps and the tailpipe rubber to get. Any tips on the front pipe to manifold bolts? Are they bolts or studs?macplaxton wrote:Depends on manufacturer of system or previous bodgery, but if we discount those two items, you have three pieces.

Just soak them in PlusGas (or penetrating oil of choice) and take your time. They are studs.baron_matt wrote:Any tips on the front pipe to manifold bolts?

Of which, replacements, if needed are available from Mac.

Boxes arrived yesterday and they are no good. Mid pipe looks like its been run over with a truck and has 45 degree bend and crushed end. Looks like the Volvo won't get sorted this weekend.

City Link, exhaust supplied by Regis Exhausts. Trying to get hold of them but they are not responding to email or voicemail messages.macplaxton wrote:Bugger!

Ok, might be easier to side-step the email bit and use the ebay messaging system as it's probably better for keeping track of correspondence.
Feedback seems generally ok. Only saw one neutral mentioning the slowness of communications. Hope you get it sorted soon.
CityLink - some franchises are better than others, but even on a bad day, surely they can't be as bad as YODEL??

Its really annoying, and to be honest City Link must have driven over the pipe to do the kind of damage I've seen. 40mm diameter steel pipe is quite hard to bend.macplaxton wrote:Ok, might be easier to side-step the email bit and use the ebay messaging system as it's probably better for keeping track of correspondence.

Still trying to get a response from the exhaust place. They were lightning fast to take my cash but 6 hours later I'm still waiting for an email or even confirmation of my complaint. Nothing.

Managed to fit new exhaust this weekend and what a difference. Old system was totally fubar.
Only slight snag was a burning plastic smell on way home from workshop and this was found to be due to the cranked section of the mid pipe melting the plastic under tray ahead of the nearside front shackle mounting of the rear spring.
Brute force with a crowbar levering against the spring mounting enabled me to bend the exhaust down a bit to get some clearance on the pipe.
Rear box hanging was a bit tricky though due to the UNR1 mounting being a stubborn *&%$$
So another job done
just got to get it tracked now.
