how many miles should i be getting to 1/4 of a tank?

Post by luke 88 » 04 May 2013 04:59 pm

Hello everyone, im new to volvo's so pleases bare with me

I've just brought a b reg 360 gls and ive got to say its the best car ive had and it'll die with me. I'm never getting rid of it lol. When I brought it, it had a slight misfire. I could do 50 odd miles to a tenna's worth of fuel when it was like this. I stripped down the carb and cleaned it all out and it now runs ok however im only getting 30 miles to a tenna now. Is this normal or am I burning fuel?

Also there's a whining noise coming from the diff I think. When I dip the clutch it goes but comes bk when the clutch is out. Anybody recommend a cure or now what might be the problem?

Any advice will be much appreciated. Thanks, luke

Sounds good! Do you have any pics? The noise with the clutch released is probably the clutch release bearing

You will not get more MPG as a result of a fault. If you were getting 50 miles before and only 30 now, you have obviously made it worse.

Having said that it is extremely difficult to judge 1/4 of a tank of fuel, and you have not accounted for the variable price of fuel. Those are 2 variables could be significant.

If you paid £1.40/l that would be 1.57gal (imp) giving 32mpg for 50miles and 19mpg for 30 miles. Both are unusual for a 360, 32mpg is very good and difficult to achieve, 19mpg indicates a fault. More likely you used more than £10 in the first stint and less in the second, averaging about 25mpg).

If you want to know what is normal you need to give mpg figures, filling the tank each time or fit an mpg meter.

Have you adjusted the mixture and tickover after cleaning all the manifold nipples and breathers, what was your adjustment method?
It would also be helpful to know the Engine, B19A or B200K as these have quite different carbs. Petrol octane, ignition type number and compression ratio (lowered for unleaded?) would also be useful.
