Black Plastic Things That Sit On The Valves

Post by Cliché Guevara » 13 Jun 2013 08:15 am

Just been lapping in the valves on the B200 head and I would like to know if the little plastic part that sits between the top of the valve stem and the follower is essential.Upon removing the followers I found that one had broken.

Can I put it all back together without these?

Also this engine was really grunty but thirsty, the valves were so badly pitted there was next to no compression, which is why the head has come off for a grind and a decoke.Looking forward to see what it will be like once its all back together.

Essential - no. Desireable - oh yes.

You are referring to the little circular cushions (they are rubber, not plastic, but go hard quite quickly.
They have several functions, primarily to dampen the contact between follower and stem and ensure that any wear takes place between the cam and adjustment shim and not between the follower and stem (in operation there is a rotational element introduced to follower motion). They quieten the cam train to a considerable extent and your engine will sound very "tappety" without them.

Definitely recommend replacing them.

Tip - on reassembly adjust your valve clearances "on the bench" without the cushions in place (accurate measurement and shim selection is much easier without new springy rubber rings to compress with your feelers)
Having established the correct shims, then install the cushions and cam etc.

Strange I've never found a B200 to have pitted valves and poor compression but I usually grind them in if the head is off. The seats should be pretty hard, has it been run lean? Also do clean the curved bit of shafts/head with wet+dry and valve in a drill.

Ooh it's clean alright after several chemical showers.Due to being in NZ all I'm doing is a clean up rather than replace parts.Ive put the plastic/rubber rings back.Could I just put O rings in there instead?

This car previously belonged to an old dear who lived in Auckland.Imagine doing 100,000miles in central London over 25 years.

I guess thats why my valves were pitted.

I dont think it was running lean.If anything it ran rich and was a bit grumpy if started when warm.I'm going to check all those cold start/air flow valve thingies anyway.

I've completely removed the EGR system and the Pulsair system too.

Howdy! Since monday i`ve tried to find those little ruber things and zero, nada. Out of stock, nla, what? - that`s all i ended up with after jumping form one site to another. BUT, i have an ideea and i want you to tell me if is`t ok: can i put instead those rubber silencers, some valve o-ring -the ones that sits on the intake valves? Of course, they have to be shortened, and they will be mounted upside-down.

Still no stock?

Go to your local Volvo dealer...just spoke to mine on the phone, still available at €2.37 (including VAT @23%) each. He can only get them in bags of 10 though (€23.70), but he will give me a small discount. If you don't have a Volvo dealer, then maybe I can help you get a set. Let me know. 340pw

Mac, thank you for your support. I`ve emailed some of other companies, I got no replies so I bought eight valve stem seals and I cut them to dimension. Before that I`ve changed two shims from the tappets, in order to have the same clearance. :360:
