Volvo 340 Swapping to Renault 19 Diesel

Post by sqlurt » 30 Jun 2013 04:30 am

Would it be possible to swap a volvo B14 engine in a 340 to a Renault 19 Diesel?

You would need a 1.7 sump bellhousing and the pretty much the same bits as if converting to 16 valve power. They did come with from the factory with a 1.6D but going for an engine with more torque could push the prop over the edge so a stranger prop would be needed.

Well I'm a bit averse to loads of work....

A) loads of work tends to mount up and be ultimately expensive.
B) loads of work can lead to a advertising an "unfinished project"

Now if you don't mind loads of work and have deep pockets, then consider perahaps starting. Bear in mind though of the cash that will be swallowed up and never recoverable. Cash that could be better wasted on the gee-gees or down the dogs. :)

RHD factory diesels are as rare as rocking hosre poo.

Although like a petrol Renault-engine Volvo in drivetrain and nearest to the B172 engined cars in bits, it still has a number of differences.

1) a 360 shell with the spare wheel in the boot.
2) thick underbonnet, bulkhead, floorpan and roof soundproofing.
3) fuel cap
4) glow plug warning lamp on the dash replacing the choke light.
5) remote mounted vacuum pump for brake servo (FWD Renaults drive this off the cam, but in the Volvo that space is gobbled up by the bulkhead)
6) slow as f&*k (The D16 engine is essentially a 1595cc Renault F8M engine)
7) plastic saddle tank

The last time I saw one attempted from a fairly sound B14 Vario, it became a "B" above. Don't let me put you off. It's just I'd rather start with a diesel where the factory has done all the hard work.

I've considered the swap and the are fairly simple solutions to most of them.

Spare wheel, drop it in the boot or just don't bother with it.
The sound deadening can be added and you would probably want to have more than the factory D16
Heater plug light - relisticaly you can manage without sorting it would probably be more hassle than it is worth
Vacuum pump can be solved by using an alternator from a Vauxhall or transit with inbuilt pump. Some engineering with brackets etc will be needed.
Slow - not with a D19 turbo :D
Petrol tank will be ok as is.

The prop is the big issue and why I think using a 360 transmission and adapt the bellhousing to fit is the better option, if you start with a 360 that solves more problems.

I do often think if you need to ask the question you are usualy best of not starting the project when it is on this scale
