Carbs in bitz
Re: Carbs in bitz
I'm inclined to agree Dai, but I had Helicoils by me and don't want those studs to unscrew anyway.
The 104-101 main body in pieces,
And all together again,

Ps - had my neurology consult today - MRI booked - apparently there is now some doubt as to whether there really is a brain present.

Fantastic! Is all the cleaning done in the "special slow-cooker"?

And the main body in pieces,
And put together,
They really are all different carbs - honest!! Building up a nice reference collection but still need a type 93.

I'm worried about how many carbs are left to do I'm enjoying this and it might end at some point!

Re: Carbs in bitz
Don't worry, there is still a lot of work left to do......we need to get model specific carb kits that are better than what is around in the end.

Re: Carbs in bitz
Mac,
Be advised that for the B172K, there have been significant variations in carb as well... I have had four different carbs for this engine on my hands now, and no one is similar to another.
Changes concerned are inside the float chamber, acceleration injector, float chamber vent and idling thingie (the one that closes a channel when you apply or remove 12V)
Good job so far, nice photos!

Re: Carbs in bitz
Agreed! There was a modification in service to replace the accelerator pump jet nozzle (single to twin), a change to the a/pump bleed off orifice (close off or replace with plug. There are at least two float chamber venting arrangements (vertical lever with rubber poppet, and horizontal swivel arm type). There are also two methods of heating the idle passage (water elbow and PTC disc).
Didn't know about two versions of idle shut off solenoid though! - thanks for the tip.

Re: Carbs in bitz
It could be that the Idle shut off solenoid not being there is a 440 carb, which is a pretty normal swap over here as there are not many 340 1,7's on the scrapyard but quite a lot 440's with carb...
My previous 340 (rests in pieces) had a carb without solenoid, wire dangling loose.

Re: Carbs in bitz
Any plans for a Zenith Mac? I would like to do the same for mine at some point but not confident enough yet. How do you clean them or is that a secret?
Re: Carbs in bitz
All carbs will be covered inc. the Zenith Stromberg - it's all down to time!
Eventually I will produce a definitive reference guide covering all the 300 carbs. including specs., rebuilding, adjustments, etc.
Cleaning - ah! That would be magic and a pinch of yum yum dust !

Great work Mac, your attention to detail is a pleasure to look at. Next job: a complete V300, a bit like this?
Hope you have a good new year.
Cheers

Re: Carbs in bitz
Having a need to find something to do during my "convalescence" I decided to do a little more to this thread.
A while ago Steve P was most generous in providing me with a sample of a Zenith Stromberg CD1752SE from a 360 (B19A).
The unit is ideal as it is a well used unit in broadly reasonable condition but with commonly found issues of a seized temperature compensator and gummed up starter modulator progression holes.
On dismantling, apart from the above issues, considerable contamination was found throughout!
The usual crud on the piston,
To cheer myself up recently I indulged in a little therapy and purchased a 6lt ultrasonic cleaner - specifically of a size to help with my carburettor fetish - this CD being "a bit grubby" was the ideal test subject,
[URL=http://s61.photobucket.com/albums/h66/m ... a4c5fa.jpg]
And yes - these parts are just as they came out of the tank aftter 25mins at 60deg.C,
The device appears to work!
More to come - I have purchased a full rebuild kit including a new jet and needle together with a replacement temperature compensator (the original being totally seized) and will carry out a full recondition.
