Carbs in bitz

Post by mac » 02 Jul 2013 07:19 pm

Ever the one to seek new anorakness to stir my failing grey cells into motion I have embarked on a new project.

Basically it means taking carbs (one of each type) to pieces - and putting them back together.

Starting with the single choke Solex 32 SEIA REN 814

To begin

Image

The throttle body,

Image

The top section,

Image

The main body,

Image

All back together,

Now we move on to the early Weber 32DIR 57-8400 with micro switch

The beginning,

The top section,

The main body,

Will all that really go back together, of course.

Jeeeeez I'm a sad case!

Excellent work, and fantastic pics. That truly is a labour of love. Several months work straight away! One request though, can you say which cars these carbs were put onto? These first two are for the B14 I believe but fairly early? The early model years are a bit of a mystery to me :) Just a thought.

I hope to eventually produce a "master" reference guide to 300 carburation, but since Andy has asked:-

B14.0E   Weber 32DIR 57-8400 (76,77)   32DIR 57-8401 (78) 32 DIR 73-100 (78)
B14.0S   Weber 32DIR 48-6200 (76,77). 32DIR 48-6201 (78)   32DIR 74-6201 (78,79)
B14.1E   Weber 32DIR 83-100 (79,80)
B14.1S   Weber 32DIR 85-100 (79,80)
B14.2E   Weber 32DIR 93-100 (81)  32DIR 93-101 (82,83)
B14.2S   Weber 32DIR 84-100 (80)
B14.3S   Weber 32DIR 95-100 (81)  32DIR 95-101 (82,83)
B14.3E   Solex  32SEIA Ren796 (82) Ren814 (83) Ren828 (84-86)
B14.4E   Weber 32DIR 104-100 (84)  32DIR 104-101 (85) 32DIR 109-100 (86 on)
B14.4S   Weber 32DIR 105-100 (84)  32DIR 105-101 (85)  32DIR 105-101 (86 on)
B14.4O  Weber 32DIR 110-100 (86 on)
B172K   Solex   28-34 CISAC Z10 (86
B19A    Zenith  175 CD-2SE (81-84)
B200K  Solex   34-34 CISAC (85

I have yet to research the CISAC and Zenith variants - there are at least 2 versions on the B172K (idle passage heating by water elbow or by thermistor disc) and 2 versions of idle control on the B19A. The B200K I have not looked at at all yet.
Hopefully an anorak greater than I will correct any mistakes and help fill in any gaps!

There is also the Weber conversion for the B172k, I've no idea if it was an OEM or not, but they are so plentiful I'd suggest it be mentioned. Missing a lot of the features of the original CISAC, but maintaining the problem of warping carb bases :s

CD175's, I'd hope that they arn't all that complicated given they are effectively the same Stromberg used in everything that isn't SU in the 1970s? Thats bound to not be the case though. I have at least one, probably 2 here if you want some to take apart?

You are doing it much better than I did years ago :D
This is Solex Cisac z11 from B200K -88 model (Z10 in B172K, Z1 in many Peugeot and Citroen cars, basicly same thing with some small differences, same issues with all of them)
http://jtbo.pp.fi/images/album/360/cisac2/album/

I just did take apart Solex 32 SEIA REN, cleaned and sealed as idle speed was not possible to set enough low, leaking, your pictures were good help to know how thing is put together.

The CD175's are the early version that was then updated to the CD2

Its a bit late so I could be wrong but the 360 has the zenith version with a 3 screw top rather than 4 screw CD175

The parts are all readily available and even new carbs are available. Stromberg and SU are my carbs of choice

There probably are not too many of B19 360's around, B200 was always with solex (afaik) and it was very short period of time where 360 naming was used with B19 engines, I guess 82-84 being timeframe or close there?

B19E is motor that I think would be something I would like the best, with Bosch ignition, it was only 1 or 2 years in production in 360GLT I believe, of course not carb, but it was similar short time when 360 has B19A.

I'm not sure how many 360's came out with other than solex carbs as there was B19K which I think was with top draft solex carb too? A-engines were supposed to be side draft carbs, like B19A, I believe.

Then before that 2ltr 343 and 345 models might have had B19 with other than solex carbs, but those were not 360 models.

However my head is bit hazy and can't quite remember that all anymore too well, but I think those few years 82-84 being one of the best 300 series cars are ultimately rare examples now?

Of course as yearmodel changes at september that is 83 to 86 models in year model terms instead of when car was sold years I believe. I think, not quite sure, I think that my 343 of -81 for example is more of -82 as it's autumn model and has Solex 32 SEIA REN carb, it was Weber in -81 MY cars I believe?.

Very confusing and easy to get mixed up with all those changes made to cars 'mid year'

83 MY was first for 360 I believe, but one might been able to buy such at late -82.

Just had a look at the A reg 360 and the carb on that is a 175 CD. All versions are interchangeable. The big plus point of them is they will support engine mods by simply changing needles to supply the right amount of fuel for any changes you make.

Agree to an extent, but choosing needles is pretty much the same as mapping an ECU without a feedback loop! Each needle has 10 zones, each calibrated in the same way that the bins in an ECU map are.

It's an interesting game, myself and a friend spend a fair chunk of time comparing the fuel map in the clio Williams ECU (i.e. Fake) and the needles in his Dolomite Sprint, given that is also a 2.0L 16V engine. They are so close it's hilarious, to the extent I'd be interested to try a F7R on twin Stroms with those needles one day!

Keeps getting better!

Only thing I would mention is with thread repairs I have found Time serts to be much stronger and 100% reliable as where helicoils can be a bit hit and miss and do not like being undone and done up again.
