A bit of a problem?

Post by diesel » 06 Jul 2013 09:49 am

Hi, I had changed motor oil in mine 1, 6 diesel 340 GL. Before it was a 15 W 40 mineral oil and now I put 10 W 40 Shell semi sintetyc. I have noticed that oil light does not turn off for a 2 sec after starting a cold motor. That never happened before with mineral oil. Starting warm engine is normal, the light turns off immediately . Does it mean that the engine better runs with mineral oil?

what type of oil filter have you used?

i suspect the new filter doesn't have a one way valve (rubber flap) in it and so the pump has to refill the oil gallery every time you start

It is a Champion filter, should I replaced it or that is not a serious problem?

I think it should be fine as long as it is not revved high before the channel fills up again. But I'd look into perhaps getting a better filter like a Bosch one if you can. But you'll probably be ok until next oil change.

How old did the box look that the filter came in?

It looked normal, but I did not looked carefully...I don,t know.... Do you know what kind of oil was originally put in the car in the factory? Was it 15 W 40 or a 10 W 40?

Throw it in the bin.

Use only original Volvo filter 3467632-0. The anti-drain valve works on them.

Second choice would be a Mann filter.

Leave the 10W 40 Shell semi-synthetic in. 10W 40 or 15W 40 should be okay.

Change the filter first and see if the problem goes away. Because the filter sit on the side, the anti-drain valve has to work or else it all drains back to the sump.

Volvo recommends:

From Green Book (Factory Workshop Manual) (from the Technical Section of this forum  ) : http://www.volvo300mania.com/forum-uk/v ... =36&t=7259 , page 2 of the Specifications PDF - 15W 40 (API Service classification, minimum CD (oils designated SC/CD, SD/CD, SE/CD, SF/CD comply with this standard), normal climates (or 10W 30 for colder climates, for hot climates 20W 40)

From Volvo Cars Castrol PDF: http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/pdf/VolvoOi ... 07UKv5.pdf , 10W 40 (ACEA A3/B3) (Castrol GTX - the regular GTX. Castrol also do a GTX high mileage (100,000km+) which is 15W 40)

My 1989 driver's handbook doesn't mention the diesel engine oil, only the diesel fuel consumption. But then again it is an English / GB handbook where they didn't sell them.

From Castrol UK/IRL site:
Image
castrol by macplaxton, on Flickr

Interval: 6 months / 6,000 miles / 10,000 km. Where cars are driven frequently under severe conditions such as: short distances in cold weather, city driving, constant high speeds, high temperatures, mountain roads or towing a heavy trailer, the oil should be changed every 3,000 miles / 5,000 km. Oil filter should be changed at same intervals.

I'd worry about the oil for next time  Filter first.

Always worth looking in the Technical Section of the forum

I wouldn't worry too much about the viscosity / grade. 10W 40, 15W 40, 15W 50, as long as it has the ACEA B3 or B4 spec.

I've got a used Volvo oil filter here. I think I may cut it open to photograph the insides. Maybe you can do the same with the Champion one (I assume it is part number F103)?

Problem solved!

It was the oil filter, just as Mac said. The salesman gave me a Purflux filter, said that that is original one for all France engines. It is smaller than Champion one and it has the anti drain valve in the middle. Because it is almost twice smaller it is much easier to mount on.

Thank you again.

P.S. I saw the exact DL diesel that you have, yesterday near my work place in Zagreb. Exact color, 48 000 km, perfect, I took a picture of it, people were looking at me strangely :) :)

I know Purflux is OEM on Peugeot Citroen cars. (I also own a Citroen GS)

Good to hear it is working properly again. Now you know there are good oil filters and bad ones. I would still recommend a Volvo one for next time.

Look forward to seeing more pictures sm4
