Idle problem
Idle problem
So my car has started idling erratically and i can't find or don't know of any problem. When driving and coming to a stop the car can either idle high (1000rpm<) or sometimes very low and near enough cutting out. I have tried changing the idle speed with the adjustment screw on the carb but the problem is when i am driving. This is on a B172K 1.7 340gl, any help appreciated
Thanks Ben……..
Thanks Ben……..
Re: Idle problem
Also the idle isn't smooth and its as if its misfiring but when holding a rev above the idle speed it doesn't miss at all..

Re: Idle problem
Air leak..
Have you checked the carb bolts are tight? How long has it been doing it?

Re: Idle problem
You can test for air leaks by spraying carb cleaner around the joint faces and listen for a change in engine note. If the sound changes then you have a leak

Re: Idle problem
Just to help anyone doing a search in the futureBenfraser wrote:Rough running b172k engine… Problems fixed throughout
Had some engine problems on the 172k engine recently, started with some rough running, poor idling and cutting out. When i took the carb apart i found a return jet pipe fallen off in the float chamber, a cracked gasket on the bottom of the carb and a few other little problems. After talking to Mac from the forum i got a new gasket, new rotor arm and dizzy cap to go with it as i was sure this was at least part of the problem.
So after fitting these parts the engine was smoother but down quite considerably on power at top end and it felt like it was being starved of fuel at high rpm so i took it apart again to see what i could find. I reset the idling screw and the CO screw to get the correct mixture at low end. I also then found i had a sticking throttle cable and choke cable which was over riding the idle screw and messing with the mixture at high end rpm by the choke sticking.
After loosening these off and greasing them i put everything back together again! Then i correctly reset both the idle screw and the CO screw. Once i done this i drove it again and it felt a lot better! At high end i felt i had the power back again and it was a lot smoother. As well as this the idle was no longer erratic and it was also smoother.
These problems started by the car jolting and cutting out when driving along normally under normal load. I first thought this was fuelling problems and i possibly had a blockage however it turned out to be an air leak from the cracked gasket and a weak mixture/spark from the rotor arm.
Hope this helps anyone having problems with the B172k engine

Re: Idle problem
I've read all this thread. I just want to make sure I am thinking in a right way. I gave 360 B200 85 kW . I have noticed that the idle is high, even when the engine is in its working temperature Rpm are about 1200. And it is not normal. And I've also notices that sometimes even driving normally car jolts for few times time to time. Previous owner mentioned that throttle pedal/cable was stuck and he repaired it, but from description of Benfraser I am thinking to check it once again, and if it is not going to work so what should I do next?
Cheers.
Cheers.

Re: Idle problem
This thread is for 340 1.7s, 360's do not get the same issues and are more reliable. You probably have a basic maintenance issue. Split pipes, blocked pipes, incorrect adjustments, gummed up mechanism. You don't say what engine you have, you left the letter off the end that indicates Injection or Carb.

Re: Idle problem
It should be injection, because it is GLE model, but I am not 100 % sure. So should I first check what you've mentioned or should I look to something else?
Re: Idle problem
Err yes you need to know what type of engine you have before knowing how to diagnose it. Injections are pretty reliable, air leak would be the most common problem.
In the UK a GLE is carb engine. 'GLE injection' is injection, 'GLT' is injection. Might be different in Lithuania.

Re: Idle problem
According to this it should be B200E 85 kW

Re: Idle problem
I read this http://www.volvo300mania.com/forum-uk/v ... de#p178010 and I was looking as it was said behind the distributor but could not find it. Then I was looking here http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/vin_300.shtml and in my VIN engine code is 24 so I am totally confused
