Torque settings

Have searched the forum and the green books but cant find the torque wrench settings for the inlet or exhaust manifold nots and bolts.

Have I missed something or are they not there?

What are they please?

G too would like to know this for when my turbo mani goes on. is there a way to make sure the bolts don't snap on removal also?

no specific torque wrench setting in my books either. normally M8 bolts/nuts in 8.8 strength are tightened to 23Nm, i would advise to do that or tighten them by feel
the inlet manifold nuts are flanged, normally that's also a securing tool but on my 360 they loosened up rather quickly after my service last year; i'd reccomend using a little bit of Loctite 243 on them for fitting just to make sure they stay tight

the exhaust manifold bolts snap on removal because the nut has rotten to the stud. it depends how badly corroded the studs are if you can use them again, with most redblocks there allways snap a few off if they haven't been touched in years. downside is that you have to remove the downpipe first if you want to get the exhaust manifold off if there's a stud broken; normally the broken studs can be easaly removed from the cilinderhead if the manifold is off.
to prevent this from happening the next time you can use copper nuts on the exhaust manifold

I'm using A4 80 stainless nuts and bolts and doing them up like you say,by feel.23nm sounds too loose to me.

BMW E30s use a really quite nice M8 copper obround nut (I can't remember the proper name, but they are squished to provide some locking force)

Yup my Astra G uses those too,the original ones on the 360 are squashed steel ones.I have an unlimited supply of high tensile stainless stuff.Having said that I wont be using stainless on anything load bearing,suspension/engine mounts/steering etc etc.

Inlet manifold to exhaust manifold:
Bolt...... 7 to 13 lbf ft - 10 to 18 Nm
Screw... 11 to 15 lbf ft - 15 to 20 Nm
Nut...... 11 to 15 lbf ft - 15 to 20 Nm


Manifolds to cylinder head
B172.... 13 lbf ft - 18 Nm
All other models... 11 to 15 lbf ft - 15 to 20 Nm


They don't sound much but is what my book says.

You can try and use anti-sieze or copper grease to stop them seizing on to the threads.

Thanks for that.I've probably done them a lot tighter than that.Finger tight and then 90 degrees.Just have to weight and see :?
