Help: Cant turn right
Help: Cant turn right
So my cars developed a weird problem where when i turn right my car wants to cut out and boggs out. It smells like its over fuelling but i guess it could be loss of spark because there would be unburnt fuel? This happens when i go around a long corner or even around a small mini roundabout, the mini roundabouts are worse and the cars will inevitably cut out half way around it. When i go around longer corners it bogs and coughs but doesn't cut out. As well as this when i brake sharply and hard it does the same thing where it smells like its over fuelling and will idle low and cut out. The sharper the brake, the worse it becomes. If i am going down hill and have to brake sharply it will just die on me.
Any ideas or help appreciated,
Thanks ben….

Re: Help: Cant turn right
Sounds like carb floats, I had a similar problem although not quite this extreme on my 1.7. Yours could well be leaking and completely sunk, causing the float chamber to fill up with fuel and leak out.

What would you suggest?Speedy88 wrote:Sounds like carb floats, I had a similar problem although not quite this extreme on my 1.7. Yours could well be leaking and completely sunk, causing the float chamber to fill up with fuel and leak out.
Re: Help: Cant turn right
You'll need to get new ones, what engine are you running? 1.7 in your signature?
Make sure the floats have sunk though, they should be buoyant in the chamber.

Yes it's a 1.7 and ill have a look at them tonight and seeSpeedy88 wrote:You'll need to get new ones, what engine are you running? 1.7 in your signature?

Fit fuel injection, carbs never liked corners anyway

A bit yes, and expensive unless you can transfer something from a Renault, was joking really. I have always noticed my carb 300s bog in the corners, but the injections don't.

Re: Help: Cant turn right
Bogging is one thing but to the extent that i cant go around a mini roundabout without it cutting out!
Re: Help: Cant turn right
So today I took my carb apart to troubleshoot and I first off measured the float height which came up as an odd reading (I had found the exact values in the engine spec in the green books section) and then I had heard about the common problem of the floats becoming pouros and absorbing fuel thus making the float heavier and not allowing the v.alve to close all the way. So I weighed mine and it came out at 16g. I looked in the spec and saw it should weigh 6g plus or minus 1. So hopefully this should resolve the problem as this would cause it to over fuel and run rich.
New float on tomorrow and hopefully all will be well

Why weigh it?
Shake it, shake it, shake it. You'll hear sloooshing petrol inside if it's leaky. To find out how many holes it has, boil up a pan of water (turn a gas stove off) and with some plies dip it in the hot water. Bubbles will stream out of the holes.
Also, worth a browse.... http://www.volvo300mania.com/forum-uk/v ... =39&t=9289

Re: Help: Cant turn right
Th 1.7 carb has solid/spongy floats that mac says 'cannot leak'. It not like the 1.4 with a metal hollow float.
They can absorb fuel, and I guess do not rattle.

Ahh, forgot about them pesky buggers that lose their skin and soak up fuel like a sponge.Ride_on wrote:Th 1.7 carb has solid/spongy floats
I reckon Mac should change his wording and lose the "cannot leak" mentions. It seems that ethanol may "eat" away at the skin of some types of these floats and they effectively become leaky. Okay, so they don't rattle, but a pot of water would show if they floated properly (or not) in the absence of scales. A boiling water test should still show up the problem though?
