1, 6 diesel alternator belt
1, 6 diesel alternator belt
Please help,
alternator belt broken 2 months old, i wonder if that is normal? When I tighten it, after maybe 150, 200 km, the alternator indicator start to blink. It blinks once or twice and no more, the belt feels tighten when touched by hand, but it snaps. I don,t know what is the problem. The mechanic installed a 815 belt and said that the belt should be tighten every now and then. I don t know if that is normal?
alternator belt is 4P4885 and V belt is 70 instead of 75, my mechanic said that this is not a reason that belt was broken but he doesn t know why it broke

Re: 1, 6 diesel alternator belt
Two ALT+WP belts are listed. What is your engine/motor number?
up to engine number 14931:
Alternator + water pump belt: Volvo 33431064 (DAYCO 4PK884) - 4 ribs and length between 884-890 is okay)
Vacuum pump for brakes: Volvo 966894 - 10mm x 750mm V-belt. (width +/- 0.5mm and length +/- 10mm should be okay)
from engine number 14932:
Alternator + water pump belt: Volvo 3342860 (DAYCO 5PK884) - 5 ribs and length between 884-890 is okay)
Vacuum pump for brakes: Volvo 966894 - 10mm x 750mm V-belt. (width +/- 0.5mm and length +/- 10mm should be okay)
Depending on operating conditions I would expect a V-belt to last 3 to 5 years.
Maybe this Gates document will explain the failure (sorry could only find in English): http://www.gates.com/cool/images/V-Belt ... 5B1%5D.pdf

My engine number is 13240?
That is the only number that has 5 digit and is mounted on a little plate on the side of an engine block.

Alternator belt is okay then (4 ribs)
Not so sure about the V belt. 70cm does sound short compared to 75cm, but I don't know how much adjustment there is.
Do not overtighten the belt. Tension should be just enough not to slip.

Re: 1, 6 diesel alternator belt
V belt is 10 x 750 I ve looked it again....
So, conclusion, V belt is ok, alternator belt is ok, but it brakes every 2 months....hm...mystery?
And, when broken, part of it came under the time belt and make it jump few ribs, so the diesel pump was not in the phase and i had to tow it to the mechanic 20 Pounds additional cost
I would not grumble over this situation if I was sure that it would not happen again. The same belt is once again mounted and so...will see
Everything else is in perfect order, 6 liters/100 km of diesel in town driving condition, cca 10 000 km traveled in 4 months from the purchase....everything perfect but the stupid belt mystery problem

Correct tension?
Any pulley damage?
Any pulley wear?
Alignment of pulley(s)?
