Starter motor differences B19 / B200

Hello!

I have a starter motor question. The motor on my '82 B19 343 DLS has been getting a little sticky of late. Does anyone know what the differences to later versions are? The parts catalogue lists several versions:

1306503-2 superseded by 463856-5
5001599-9 Exchange Unit for 1306503

463856-5 CH -827548 (about mid- 1984)
1346707-1 CH 827549- (Hitachi)

1357199 B200 Bosch

Are they all interchangeable? Several parts websites seem to suggest they are ...

Cheers

Tom

I would hazard a guess and say they are.

Mounting on bell housing and block I'd expect to be the same. Next I'd check the flywheel position/teeth to ensure the motor has the correct amount/size/reach of pinion/teeth.

I'll have a look in the big book of starters in a minute.

All starters from B18 B20 B19 B21 B23 B200 and B230 are interchangeable.

The big difference with later starters is they are threaded and hold on with bolts from the bellhousing. Early ones use a nut and bolt ond are a bit bigger

The 940 turbos appear to have smaller starters, and they certainly turn slower. B19/B200 360 should be interchangable, but I wonder if the lower compression engines used smaller starters?

Hi Tom, on my 1986 GLT b200e I have mounted the starter from my ex b19. It`s a perfect fit, althought the b19 one is smaller.

Cheers Alf. It's getting cold and dark, and I'm not looking forward to crawling under the car at the moment, in a cramped, unlit garage. I wonder whether I'll get around to it before spring sm14

I remember driving our 343 Junior for the whole of the '98/'99 winter without a starter. I got quite used to pushing the car along myself, waiting to get up speed, and then hopping in at the right moment. Not something I fancy doing anymore, particularly not with the heavier DLS ...

Cheers

Tom

Hey Tom,

In my opinion you'd better get the original starter motor reconditioned. That's cheaper than a brand new one and fitting a used starter motor isn't the way to go (not reliable, and will probably die within a short time).

If you don't want to use the original starter motor anymore, than fitting one from the later redblocks (B200/B230) is a good alternative. Those newer ones are not as "heavy" as the older ones.

I've got a few replacement starters in my parts stash ... they're all from later cars though. Good to know they will fit. I'll keep the old one, in case I find the time to take it apart ... some day ...

I developed quite a knack of "self-push-starting" at the time. It was only a problem when it snowed: #1 getting up enough grip myself to push the car, #2 the rear wheels slipping when letting the clutch go.

I did it for a while in the early '90s when I had something reasonably light to push (Reliant Regal). In the late '90s it was every morning for a while for the first start of the day with the Kawasaki GT550 I had (about 250kg, but a run dressed in full motorcycle gear) because although the motor was fine, the starter roller clutch was jiggered and wouldn't lock-on to turn the engine - running was preferable to having to pull the engine out and split the crankcase to get at the 80 quid part. Last month I had a flat-ish battery in the Citroen GS, but there's no grief with that one, for although the car is from 1978, then engine is the right way round and it has a starting handle... sm4

Starters between B19 and B200 are interchangable. B200 ones are smaller because those are geared so the motor doesn't have to be as powerfull and large. B19 ones are direct drive so the motor has to be more powerfull to turn the engine.
