Hi,

It's a decelerating mechanism

I didn't think that part was fitted to a 32DIR 104 - 100 used on MY84 & MY85. :?

Can I join the confused club until mac turns up?

Don't tell me it has got one of those roundy things like in the far left of this pic?

Hi girls,

Well we definitely see a Weber 32Dir type 104 or later - the full load enrichment device housing, and float chamber vent (missing it's cap) can clearly be seen.

We also see (as MP has said) the throttle actuating servo for the "deceleration mechanism". This is an emissions reduction system used only on the 'S' variants of the B14 engine.
Briefly under conditions of closing throttle, vacuum is fed (by a control system) to the actuating servo - this operates a linkage (also seen in the pic) to an arm on the "rear" of the primary butterfly shaft. The effect is to delay the closing of the butterfly.

If the throttle is shut "instantly" the engine will continue to run, of course, via the idle by-pass passage but the momentary very high manifold depression will briefly draw excess fuel through the main jets vis the secondary venturi giving an over rich mixture when the throttle is opened. Delaying the throttle closure reduces manifold depression and also allows some mixture passage via the primary butterfly during the transition to the idle circuit.
Whilst engine speed decay is delayed emission levels are also reduced considerably.

The actuating servo discussed here has its vacuum connection plugged and is plainly not in use. The plugging of the pipe serves no purpose other than to prevent dirt access into the unused device.

The "problem" we have is that the deceleration mechanism was never used on type 104 Dirs - the presence of the servo and lever on the butterfly shaft suggests that this carburettor is probably a type 105 or type 110. Or, if the body is clearly marked as a 104, it has at some stage been rebuilt to the specification of a 105. Or we have a 105 re-marked as a 104.

It is possible that this carb also has a secondary device - a dampening dashpot at the other end of the throttle shaft on which the throttle linkage acts - its purpose also to delay throttle closure.

Is this a UK car? - does it really have a type 104?

Mac.

Thank you for your answer.
This is a Hungarian car, with a 72 Hp engine. This would be the B14s?
I'm not sure that is a 104 but I did not find any information for 105 or 110 carbs.

Otherwise consume a lot of fuel. 10L/100km ~23 MPG
and not very powerful, top speed: 125-130 Km/h ~ 77-80 mph
and the exhaust is black :?
I tighten up the 5 (4, because the previous ovner overtightened 1) carb bolts under the air filter house because they are very loose, but did not improve the power or the fuel economy.

This week I bought a rebuild kit for a 104. It will be good?

10 l/100km is 28.2mpg. (Imperial UK gallons are bigger (4.546 l) than tiny US ones (3.785 l)

It's still poor for a manual.

Hi again

Not sure what spec engine would be in a Hungarian car but I suspect "European excluding Sweden" ie:- same as UK.

Regardless, whether "your" carb is a 105 or 104 with extra bits it would make little difference (the 105 is a 104 with the addition of extra emission gear).
The rebuild kit will be quite suitable (although I notice it seems not to include a replacement choke flap pull off diaphragm)

Before you start, have a look at the following article I wrote (hosted in the how to guides section of technical resources)
You can download it (it's in PDF format and it should give you a few tips on what to look for.).

For grossly rich mixture check for blocked air filter (main air cleaner), loose main jets, basic adjustments including float height, check also for a punctured float.

Oh sorry, I used online calculator :D
Yes, very poor. Our other car is a Skoda Felicia 1.3MPi do 50 MPG

Yes unfortunately this is a very cheap rebuild kit, only a 2200 HUF ~ 6 GBP
I can use the old one?

Thank you, i had read that pdf, very detailed and useful. :)
Monday I will start to do.

One more question: What do you use to clean the carbs?

Assuming the choke pull off diaphragm is not punctured or otherwise damaged it can certainly be re-used no problem (they rarely are damaged) that certainly is a cheap kit! - in the UK something similar would be £30 - £35 GBP.

As for cleaning - I usually say "magic" or "trade secret" but actually unless the grime is very stubborn I find White Spirit (also known as Turpentine Substitute) is very effective. I tend to dismantle the unit and soak the components over night
and use small brushed like toothbrushes.
If you do this though I highly recommend you use a compressed air line to carefully blow out the passages and fine drillings after the overnight soak.
