hybrid clutch issues..

Post by madseb » 01 Jul 2014 08:34 pm

Hi all,
I need to call on your technical knowledge (or the previous owners of this car)

to start the story, I am the new (be it a year) owner of trundle 2.

now this car had undergone a b18ft conversion at some point in its life, and the time has come to replace its clutch.

being a conversion this isn't so simple (as I have found out after purchasing an "uprated" clutch from ebay)
ive purchased a stage 2 uprated Volvo 480 turbo clutch, and have found this unsuitable for the flywheel or bellhousing.

so ill present you with the facts I already have at my disposal:
the input shaft of the bell housing (that the clutch mounts to) is a 1.7 20 spline.
the flywheel is what I believe to be the original 480t item. (7 bolt crank fixture, 6 bolt clutch fixture) and has a part number of stamped on it of, DA 088381 5
pressure plate that was removed from the car is stamped as valeo, and I cant find a part number.
friction plate that was removed from the car is stamped as " 168-2 , 131-3, q made in the uk"

im at a bit of a loose end.
I suspect the centre plate to be a 1.7 Volvo item, although the pressure plate has me stumped.
the idea was to purchase the uprated item, although I feel that this hybrids going to cause a few issues.

if anyone could shed some light on this I would be greatfull.

further investigation using this link:
http://www.volvo-480-europe.org/volvo48 ... 3ELC549404

I think my engine is from a 1990 440 turbo. (my engine plate reads: b18ft 107 C054947)
06 = B18FT(M)-107
C = NedCar, Born (Netherlands)
549001 - 563101 = 1990

thanks
madseb.

You will need to use the turbo pressure plate with the 1.7 friction plate and bearing. Using a uprated pressure plate should still be fine with a stock friction plate

thanks dai, this were my understanding already.
ideally I need to find out what ive got, before making orders and such, hence the questions

can anyone shed any light on the above?

original compnents cannot be reused as they are worn out.

also on another note, does anyone know where I can get a replacement spigot bearing (the one that sits on the crank end of the bellhousing splines?)

4x0T's had two different clutch sizes, 8in and 8.5in. Both use the same dia flywheel with slightly different bolt patterns to the pressure plate.

I've no idea what is in your car I'm afraid, but in my B18FT (which only ever pulled itself around the drive) and my F7R (with ~40,000 miles on it in the 300), there is a 340 1.7 spigot bearing, 340 1.7 friction plate, 480T (early, 8in) pressure plate and 340 1.7 clutch release bearing. Flywheel in the F7 is 340 1.7, in the B18FT is the orig early B18FT's (as the trigger pattern is different).

Didn't know you had Trundle, good to hear that it is still around. Was a lovely shell last time I saw it.

dai:
have just placed an order for the bearing, thanks for bringing that to my attention, had to nab a couple of those awsome "mac" diff cover gasket kits while i was there.

chris:
i have the inclination that the clutch could be very much like you have described.
unfortunately i cannot find any part numbers anywhere to compare.

as a last resort, i think my best bet is to send the old clutch assembly off to be remanufactured and uprated. can anyone recommend a good reliable service?
i have tried friction services, as i found in another post, unfortunately they can only uprate to around 10% extra, and i need a bit more than this. (circa 200bhp at the moment)

Thanks

The majority of the clutches are the older ones and the big clutch only came in on the 1992 model. The common clutch is 200 and the 92 on is 215mm

thanks dai,
the baring and the diff gaskets came today. uber chuffed with them. fantastic build quality. (currently hunting for some gearbox gaskets to complete a rebuild)

as per my previous post. can anyone suggest a clutch remanufacturer for my hybrid?
