Update on my sugru experiment. Well impressed with this stuff. It came out slightly off center but it has cured just like rubber and I was able to press it over the shaft without it tearing or deforming. It looks like I will be getting some more in black and going ahead with it. It grips the shaft well and looks to be perfect. There is no real pressure on the rubber as the bearing will be turning. I'm happy enough to go with this (properly done) for now.

My wife was asking me to find picture hooks all week that would not damage the paint, she had a swipe at me last night while making this, 'maybe you can make some hooks from that stuff!' So I made one with the leftovers, she was not impressed to find it stuck to the wall this morning.

OK, managed to get to the bearing shop after work, I had phoned beforehand and he sent an email to INA to try to chase up the part number on the housing. Got the response. No record of the number.

Left with 3 new shiny FAG bearings. I have rebuilt one, I pressed the housing together with the bearing inside using a vise and two steel plates to keep it flush. Went in easy. Then I cracked open the cheap draper rivetting set I bought and found the best fitting rivet, went to rivet it together. (something I've never done before) Then realised the head of the rivet gun was too wide to get into the space. Was considering grinding it down when I thought of popping a nut over it to act as an extension. The only ones I could find suitable were out of my sons meccano set. 2 regular nuts did the job perfectly. Here is the result, silent bearings are coming my way!!





Very happy with this result. I have the bearing guy chasing up a company that make inserts to see if they have the size required. For now I am pulling the other tubes bearings to salvage one of the inserts and will rebuild that when I find an alternative, then use it as a test bed.

that's funny, i've done the exact same repair last week. i've made a ø75,5mm press tool to get the bearings out, worked fine and was done in 15 min

the rubber inserts are easy to press out with a proper tool, i don't have any damage on them with getting them out

i didn't use regular rives though as with the hole diameter the heads would be too wide, instead i made a set out of aluminium and used a hammer to flange them, fits perfectly now

great job anyway, we're probably the first few doing this repair instead of just replacing the whole tube for a less noisy one

How is yours now it is on the car? Any noise?

I just set about taking the bearings out of the tube that was generously donated by Mchudd. Contrary to my first post they came out easy in 15 minutes. That bloody tool the DAF lads left in there was what was making it so bloody difficult the first time. Barely broke sweat this time.

I don't know yet, it's for my 343 that's getting a b230 swap, i've just started building the engine lol

And I have three new bearings ready to go.




Noticed a difference in the tubes, I'm guessing this was an economic supersesssion? The one on the right is later.

Same story here. My 360 will have a b230et which I will start building right after I get all the drivetrain back on the car. Will be driving her on the b19a while I build the big beast. Will be a few weeks before I get to test this. Then again, it's been a year since I said a few weeks last time.....

Can't believe what I have done!

I measured everything up, started winding in the first bearing from the rear before I realised they would not pass the access holes. Pinched the rubber and had to back it out again.

I spent the last few hours winding the first and second bearings in from the front, carefully measuring as I went. Only to realise as I started pulling in the last one that I had forgotten to reverse the measurements. AAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGG!!!!!!

Got to pull them all back out and start again. So much for a day off tomorrow..

Eh voila!



Turns silently. Just needs the paint touching up and she's ready to go. Will do a full write up later. I am absolutely knackered from all the turning.

Cheers Mchudd, your tube made this possible. The rubber insert that delaminated was replaced with one from the other tube. Without it I would be stuck with the one I made, not ideal as I have no way of testing the longevity of the stuff.

I have to admit I was not happy that it was turning freely, so, today I set about pulling it all out again and starting again. I had measured the front and rear bearing housings and they were both squint, about 1mm off straight. I tapped them straight from either end but it was still not spinning freely.

I borrowed a specialist pulling kit from a guy I know through work. Been at it all day and I finally have a tube that spins freely and is silent.

Even with the specialist tool the bearing housings were not going in square. I made a measuring stick and when each one was in position I went around the four axis and tapped each one square. It was a long annoying day but the results are exactly what I set out to do. Will write this up later with part numbers etc.
