CV joints
CV joints
Does anyone know about the CV joints?;
-What is the difference between the 340 and 360 halfshafts, is it just the shaft or are the joints different?
-Is there a gasket that goes between the CV and drive flange on the 360?
-Any specs on the dimensions? bolt centre diameter = 81mm? splines = 22, od=24mm?

Re: CV joints
I'll have to check later when I finish work at silly o'clock. Think the spline count is different to 340.

Re: CV joints
- The shafts are different as well as the joints - Parts books list two different numbers. We'll call them Type A and Type B. Type A is for B14, B172, B19A, B200K. Type B is for the B19E, B200E, B200F.
- There is a gasket - 3293186 - that is sandwiched between the face of the joint and respective flange, so 4 per car. Obsolete from Volvo. The original Volvo ones were self-adhesive on one side to assist fitting them. Doesn't really matter much. Robbert-Jan has repros anyway. http://www.born-built-beauties.eu/html/ ... n_par.html
- Driveshaft is 493mm long for the whole range. Type A is 22 spline, Type B is 24 spline
Re: CV joints
Thanks mate, The Haynes says the gaskets are fitted only to the early cars, later cars don't have one at the drive flange and my CVs have no recess, however there does seem to be one between the metal cover and the CV block/outer race. I hadn't realise the covers are removable.
Some joints + complete assemblies are listed in Skandix, although the database says it doesn't fit an 87 B200K, the description does when using a 340 search.
9031171 - drive shaft (probably complete) - EUR189 - 85-on B200E+F (0 stock, exchange)
9031170 - driveshaft (picture shows complete) - EUR 189 - everthing but 85-on B200E+F (0 stock exchange)
3202921 - Joint kit (picture shows 24 spline) - EUR50 - 85-on B200E+F (4 available)
Mark has 2 spare late 340 halfshafts so we are going to remove them tonight and I will know more then. They are probably the same as mine (87 B200K), but this leads to new problem in that I probably 'need' the uprated GLT halfshafts (as indicated by your data).
Could you possibly check if the wheel drive flanges are the same between B200K and B200E, so I can know that B200E ones will fit? Looks like this is going to be a project itself.

Re: CV joints
Drive shafts are a fairly major worry to me. Last time I looked, NonGLT CV's were unobtainium, those that did exist have all been used by the Triumph boys removing retoflex couplings in their propshafts.
GLT CV's are obtainable and are common to a something (e30 springs to mind) but the shafts are limited comparatively.

I have changed one B200K driveshaft for a B200E one and on the outside there where no differences. They look the same and drive the same. Was a low mileage second-hand one.
Re: CV joints
Can anyone with vadis, Richard? .. double check if the GLE injection has the GLT half shafts? According to the above they go with B200E so should be right.
Also would be good to nail down the shaft diameter as a double check, the 22spline 340 type are about 25mm, mine 25.5 after painting.

As stated above, whatever has the B19E, B200E or B200F has those shafts.

Re: CV joints
On know when I swapped my 340 shafts for 360 ones you could see the difference in thickness between the two.
If I were to let you have the shafts I have what would you want to pay for them? I might think about letting them go

Re: CV joints
Thanks Richard, the rule seems to work, the seller has confirmed 24 splines. I got a vida disk recently but none of my machines will run it grr..working on it.
I have sourced some from FB, from a GLEi..yey!. FYI I offered £60+postage for the pair. I probably could have got them for less as I don't think he knew of their rarety (hes scrapping a GLEi saloon!), but I didn't want to lose them or have the seller be disinterested. The closest alternative was the ebay rip offs in Denmark looking £140 a shaft (used). Could it be made for that?? Joints are £50 each new.
I've spent alot of effort cleaning, spraying and inspecting these 340/B200K ones (2 sets), alot of them in poor condition, McHudds ones have been over-angled (invented term lol), balls badly scored and the tin plate bent badly, and my B200K originals some of them corroded (including the shaft splines), balls grey or chipped race. If I replace the bearings I think I can get more good units, and want to rebuild these anyway as spares or sell on.
I've measured the bearings and get 2 results. Using my cheapy vernier looks like 19.00mm, using a better quality digital work one I get 19.04mm. Simply bearing sell 19.00+19.05mm chromed bearings. Anyone know the spec?

Re: CV joints
Not sure of the exact spec, but I depends if the joints have been reconditioned. Does anyone do that anymore? Grind out the grooves and fit oversize balls? I must look into this at some point and round up all my spares.
What specs are your machines? I've had a couple of VIDA versions working on both XP and 7 and they don't complain.

XP64 1GB ram several issues
XP home 1GB netbook, too low memory and not enough pixels
XP home 1GB desktop, not enough ram
XP home 512MB didn't even try.
What's windows 7?

Re: CV joints
Depends on the version of VIDA, but you need a bit more RAM (2GB)
Having said that, I might just dig out an ancient laptop I have here (AMD 400Mhz/K6 with 512Kb RAM and 1024x768px) and see how I get on
I don't know what win 7 is, just something I "found" to get it working. OpenSUSE 13.1 on the main box here (7 year old AMD64 Athlon X2 6000 / 8GB RAM / 2TB RAID 1 / 1680x1050px) and Lubuntu on a couple of others. Android tablets and phones here. Don't do MS and don't do Apple around here.

Re: CV joints
I've refurbed the 4 340/B200K shafts and made 3 good ones. The ball bearings seem to be 3/4" / 19.05mm spec.
It was fairly easy but alot more work than I thought, the main difficulty was seperating the splines from the inner race, its almost an interference fit in some cases and you need to support the inner race while hammering the shaft out. I could not get a puller to work but it might be possible if you remove the back plate and disassemble the joint from the outside. Even on reassembly heating and cooling the opposite parts did not help much.
I don't think the miles or pressure made that much of a difference, probably more down to grease breakdown, and/or sealing against water. All the boots where good prior to laying up and no seepage, possibly main area of failure was the tin plate cap. Although having said that all the joints worked ok prior to dissassembly.
B200E shafts have arrived so will post some details soon.
