'83 340 1.4 non-running issues

Hi folks,

My little 340DL is now at my place of work where I have access to the workshop, which is good. Unfortunately the little sod still won't talk to me. Any ideas on the following?

1: No spark at the points and a possible condensor issue - any idea on sources which won't be a pisstake of part shuffling to get it going? It's turning over quite happily now but won't play me a tune. Also, are there two condensors? Getting plenty of fuel up but nothing else. (Anyone local to Glasgow know them and fancy having a nosy? :wink: :lol: )

2: King lead for the coil. I've had seven different sets now including one set direct from Bosch and NONE of them fit. In a fit of desparation I ordered a new Bosch coil and the new Bosch leads don't fit it either!

Think that's about it for now. I'm sure there will be more soon!

One condenser. Bit far away to have a gander (20 miles from Dublin :lol: ), but like I said, I'm in town every now and then.

I'll dig out the numbers. Distributor of a Ducellier variety? (They did second source stuff (Delco), PM me a chassis number or better still, get a big photo of the numbers on the body)

Not entirely sure on the distributor... I'll have a look tomorrow. I'll drop you a PM with the chassis number, I assume the numbers are on the body of the cap or did I miss a plate somewhere? I understand 700s, still learning the 300 way! :lol:

Right I've done some looking up and you've fallen victim to mince they print in catalogues. :lol:

Here's an example of 1.4 engined Volvo stuff in the Bougicord catalogue* http://www.efi-service.com/en/search-results/

Volvo actually did the following B13/14 engine spec codes:

B13.4E (tax-buster special for certain markets)
B14.0E, B14.1E, B14.2E, B14.3E, B14.4E, B14.4E(D)
B14.0S, B14.1S, B14.2S, B14.3S, B14.4S, B14.4S+cat
B14.4O

What I think you have from the VIN sent over is a B14.3E with a Ducellier 525351A distributor with old-school contact breaker. From the following model year (1984), they went over to electronic ignition (Renix).

So a quick summary:
a) Aftermarket parts catalogues are rubbish.
b) Study the better rubbish catalogues for useful info.
c) Cross reference Volvo part numbers with aftermarket ones with caution
d) Cross reference aftermarket part number with different aftermarket ones with extreme caution. Especially if your comparing an second cross-reference with a third one (or more). It'll be like playing Chinese whispers.
e) see (a)

As you can see from above, a whole shed-load of engine codes are missing. As mentioned before, the coil can be found in 4 different places.

Having got out the tape measure and measured the coil to dizzy lead, I make it around 450-500mm without taking it off (handy I did measure it as my dizzy cap wasn't clipped down and I've down at least 50 miles like so, probably more :oops: )

The dizzy is smack bang in the middle of the very top of the block, so only needs short plug leads. Generally, they'll be all the same length.

So lets look at the Bougicord numbers listed in the catalogue, the second last column above is the HT lead set and the last column is the coil. Now you can already see inconsistencies with the coils. The 14.3 ones appear okay (not sure if they are ballasted or not, think they are), but they also suggest them for Renix cars. A Renix coil looks like this:

Onto the HT leads. Two sets are offered 2451 and 4405.

(Better Rubbish), now at least with this catalogue they show you some pics of the actual stuff, lengths and end fittings/standards.

2451 actually includes two 820mm coil to cap leads. One version has SAE 90°/ DIN 180° (for Renix) and the other a DIN 90°/DIN 90° (for contact breaker)
4405 is the same bar one coil to cap lead and that is a Renix one, except it has to 90° ends and is shorter than the other one by 250mm.

So far, so good. Now the problem with the 2451 is that whilst it'll fit, the king lead is 'king long (going by my earlier measurement). Back to the back of the catalogue. What else has a Renault Cléon engine of a similar vintage?

My first choice would be a 4404 set as the spark plug leads are all 325mm, but the king lead is more suitable at 600mm:

My second choice would be a 3414 set as the spark plug lead length have a couple slightly longer, but again the king lead is more suitable at 470mm.

I found a Bob Bosch catalogue and the suggested set is B798 (340 1.4 B14 08.79-07.91) but it does have special not ZMS against it, which tells us "for ignition coil with SAE pin", so that for a Renix car. Makes a mockery of their date range. :roll: The individual leads are listed as B40, B40, B40, B40 & F60. Scanning the catalogue there are sets with ZMB against them which would be "For ignition coil with DIN connection" which is what you want. There are three sets with 4x40s and a 50/60/70 length king lead with the connections. I would plump for B049, B138 or B117 in that order of preference.

That's the theory over. I suggest you find a motor factors with some of the above in stock and get them to open the box and measure them. Good luck 340pw


*whilst looking through the section on Renault in that catalogue I found a shed load of entries that from the model/engine codes to actually be for BMWs! :shock: :?
