Diff removal and replacement

Post by derskine » 26 Jan 2015 11:56 am

Looking at welding my diff shortly, was going to do it in situ but the gearbox to diff gasket is leaking so I'd be as well taking the diff off to replace this gasket.
Question is, can I remove the diff and replace it, and if so what steps must be taken to ensure it's set up correctly?
I've removed diffs from gearboxes on 300s I've broken but never actually had to refit one.

Not much to it, 4 speed is a bit more critical with gasket thickness and shim calculations. 5 speed is bolt on bolt off.

Decent that's a big help.
I know on other RWD cars it's recommended you mark the propshaft flange and diff flange so they're put back in the same orientation but if it doesn't matter on a 340 then great, as it's not quite as easy to mark the gearbox output shaft!

Cheers :D

Removing the driveshaft is another story and varies between 360 and 340. You can remove the diff without removing the driveshaft in a 360 not sure about a 340, vaguely possible but the gearbox will stress the driveshaft joint unless supported. I was mainly referring to removing the diff from the gearbox.

Nah I think I confused things.
On a conventional car obviously the prop goes straight to the diff so the preload is between the propshaft flange and the diff flange, but on a 340 it should be between the gearbox and diff as such.
I'm sure it doesn't matter anyway, I replaced the diff on my cortina and forgot to mark the propshaft orientation - it doesn't rattle or vibrate.

The 300 series driveshafts run at engine speed and so are lighter as the engine torque is not multiplied. To be honest I'm not sure why you are supposed to mark normal driveshafts, can't see it making any difference.

Never considered that and it's a good point.
Maybe you aren't supposed to - I read it somewhere, or someone told me, but I still forgot to do it!
