Does make much sense, how can only be not for a particular model? That means it fits all cars but one!
AFAIK there is only one type of 1.7 340 engine, the B172K.

No.
Two types, old and new. 124 and 125 tooth timing belt. If you cab spot the difference on the outside I don't know!
But I would think the clutch should be the same.

And you can even run the 125 with a 124 tooth belt ;-=
Well, for not too long, anyway ;-=

You need a clutch kit for a B172. The difference will be in the amount of splines on the pressure plate, the "non B172" kits are effectively 400 series friction plates matched up to 300 series pressure plates and release bearings. They are a cock up that someone in some aftermarket clutch company made once and has forever perpetuated, they fit no 1.7 petrol 300.

Hi guys,
i'm on the final stage of assembling my engine and need an advice.
So i bought spare volvo 1.7 engine from 4xx. cam belt was 125 teeth.
Then i had to fit this engine with my old crankshaft and head with camshaft from earlier volvo 340 1.7 which had 124 teeth.
when i tried to fit new 124 belt and it didn't fit, it was too tight. (i didn't remember at that time that it was 124 teeth belt, thought it 125)
Idler and tensioner remained from 4xx (125 teeth).
What are my next steps - fit idler and tensioner from 340 to the 4xx block or go buy 125 teeth belt?
I checked tooth count of the gear pulleys and its identical for both engines - 20/40, also diameters of idler and tensioner pulleys are the same.
what dictates different tooth count when all the pulleys have same parameters - is it only brackets for the pulleys which have a little more offset for 125?
Thanks in advance for any help.

i checked the pictures and brackets for the pulleys differ massively between the versions. not sure i can interchange them. So i guess 125 teeth belt is my option?

Hello, yes, the 125 tooth belt is the answer, having had the same problem 18 months ago....

i seem to fit all 340 pulleys to the engine and the 124 teeth belt fit alright. now need to put engine back into the car and check.
