1.7 crankshaft bearing sizes

Post by andrew » 17 Nov 2015 10:53 pm

Hi guys, need little advice on oversized bearings for the crankshaft of 1.7
i'm rebuilding my engine, is there only one oversize kind of bearings?
or 30887704 is std size and there are 3287717 and 3344542 as oversize for the 4 bearings, other than main?

on the picture these are parts n11 and 12. And 3 types of oversized thrust bearing (additionally to std size)

Are there any renault catalogs i can buy bearing from? Is it f2n, f3n renault 1/7 engine?

The engine i'm currently trying to rebuild is 1.7 from 400 series (6 bolts on valve cover) but still have original 1.7 from 340 with metal timing cover.

i wish i were.
Spare crankshaft is now at machine shop. they'll try to machine big end bearings to first undersize and main bearings to what they think necessary.

Wicked work. How do bearings get that bad?
1988 340 1.4 GL, 218k, 5 door (Grey Bess). Gone to CBA.
1991 340 1.7 GL, 64k, 5 door, petrol blue (Deep Blue).
1988 360 2.0 GLE, 140k, 5 door, ocean blue metallic (Blue Bess).

Some ones done a proper job on those bearings!

Looks like alot of heats gone through them, often caused by people driving along in a high gear doing low speed, puts extra strain on the crank, causing the oil on the bearing face to burn away quicker, causing a lack of lubrication

an un-lubed bottom end always ends in tears

I could not find bearings in stock by volvo's partnumbers so i bought bearings from Renault f3n. seems to be the same, also with locks as the ones that went out of new engine. STD for block and +0.25 for connecting rods, and STD for half ring thrust washers. will report after installation. the hard part was to find them in stock.
also decided to take the head off the new motor to check the rings and valves. From below there is not much hone seen on the cylinder wall, but i don't want to grind the cylinders. will see how it will turn out.

i have new question - there are oil injectors on my new 1.7 block from 4xx volvo. What should this tell me? Do i have to measure pistons, because this 1.7 might have been from turbo (i bought just bare block with head), or NA 1.7 from 4xx has oil squirters and use same piston as 340 1.7 engine?
